I cannot say enough about this series...except I want more! I am a big fan of Robert Jordan and GRRM and was beginning to despair that the rest were all for "young adults." Joe Abercrombie doesn't hold back. I was swept up in a world that was realistic and fantastic at the same time. Some people complain about the language but the use of "foul language" keeps you rooted in the world. This is a dark and gritty tale meant for adults. This is a must read for GRRM fans! You'll find yourself loving and hating characters at the same time much like you do in A Song of Ice and Fire! Narration was excellent!
If you love Brandon Sanderson (as I do) then you're sure to enjoy Warbreaker! Some have compared the story to Elantris but I did not see any major similarities other than it's another great stand alone story that draws the reader into a fascinating world. Brandon Sanderson's ability to create unique magic systems is amazing! I cared about the characters and found it hard to stop listening.
I've read a lot of complaints about the narration. I think we've all been spoiled by Michael Krammer and Kate Reading. While James Yaegashi is not on the level of Michael Krammer he does a good job with the characters and seems to truly understand them. That's what I look for in a narrator, someone who is doing more than just reading words on a page.
All in all a great book! If you like Brandon Sanderson you won't regret spending the credit.
I almost passed this book over while reading some of the reviews. I read statements like "boring" and "nothing new." I decided to give it a try anyway I am very glad that I did!
This is everything that I want from an Epic Fantasy book! The characters are multi-dimensional and relatable. I cared about what happened to them. The setting was rich and descriptive. The magic system is unique and interesting. I was drawn in from the start and found myself sitting in the car long after I pulled into the driveway because I didn't want to stop listening.
It's not filled with complexity like ASOIAF or the Wheel of Time but that's not to say this book is simple or childish. It's not as dark as The First Law Series but it's not rainbows and sunshine either. It's good fantasy. If you love a good book that draws you into it's world then I highly recommend The Warded Man.
I'm a fan of epic fantasy and I was beginning to fear that I had already read/listened to the best and the well was running dry...until I started the Name of The Wind.
I'll admit I had doubts when it first started, the narrator sounds very young and the story starts off a little dry. But stick with it because soon you realize that Nick Podehl's narration is perfect for this series and the story itself becomes so engaging you wont want to stop listening. I always know I've found a good series when I find myself talking out loud to the book/characters while listening and when I think about the book throughout the day.
You really get into the main character's (Kvothe) head. I laughed, cried, cringed and went through every emotion with him. He's relatable without being boring. His adventures are fun and thrilling but he's far from your typical fantasy hero.
I highly recommend this book. Please don't let the people who compare it to Harry Potter turn you away. This series is truly unique and I know you'll love Kvothe as much as I do!
This series is very original with interesting complex characters. It's always nice to listen to a truly unique series in a genre where cliches are common.
However, the narration is awful! I've listened to many audio books and Dick Hill's narration is one of the worst. He is overly dramatic at times and his style of reading is odd. You can tell when a narrator is familiar with the material and has a true love of the story. That is not the case here. He sounds as if he's reading it for the first time. It took me several tries to get through the first book but I was determined to hear the story. I'm glad I stuck with it for the story alone.
I have read several epic fantasy series. My favorites being The Wheel of Time and A Song of Ice and Fire. I would recommend this series for those starting to explore epic fantasy. The characters and plot are intriguing without being overly complex. Jim Butcher uses a unique magic system and the world itself is very similar to our own. For me the series was a bit over simplified but this is after reading several complex, long, and dark series. If this was the first epic fantasy series I had even read/listened to I would have enjoyed it even more. For those looking for a dark intricate series, I'd pass on this one. For those looking for a light fun series, dive in and enjoy! The narration is excellent, Kate Reading (who also reads the Wheel of Time series) is one of the best!
Michael Page has become one of my favorite narrators! He has a variety of voices and makes character distinction easy. He also brings them to life in a way seldom found in other audio books. He is also consistent with the voices over all three books. That seems to be something that same narrators loose over time.
The story itself is of course fantastic! Epic fantasy without being tedious. Robert V.S. Redick breathes new life in the genre. The characters are ones you can connect with and cheer on. I have listened to several epic fantasy series and this has become one of my favorites!! More please!
I was already a big fan of this book before this new audio book was released. The narrator is awesome and truly understands the characters. He brings them to life and makes all of the humor stand out! This book is easily one of my favorites!
After listening to this book I have decided to stop listening to this series. As mentioned in a previous review this series rips off The Wheel Of Time so obviously that it makes it hard to enjoy. At times I would laugh out loud because I couldn't believe that anyone could take so much from another author's work. The narrator is the best one in the series thus far. I hope he does more work with a better series.
Wheel Of Time fans beware!! I read the first book in this series and thought it was ok. Certainly nothing to compare to Robert Jordan or George R.R. Marin. I gave this book a try to see where the story would go..it went quickly into ripping off the Wheel Of Time! I couldn't believe it! I have found websites dedicated to pointing out how obvious the similarities are. The story is also very degrading towards men, which gets tiring very fast. I'd advise all Wheel Of Time fans to skip this series all together.
