When the spirit of Lara's great-aunt Sadie - a feisty, demanding girl with firm ideas about fashion, love, and the right way to dance - mysteriously appears, she has one last request: Lara must find a missing necklace that had been in Sadie's possession for more than 75 years, and Sadie cannot rest without it. Lara, on the other hand, has a number of ongoing distractions.

    "Great fun read!"

I loved this book! It was unusual, smart and just plain fun to listen to. I recommended this to our book club just a a light change of pace.

  • The Zookeeper's Wife: A War Story

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 58 mins)

When Germany invaded Poland, bombers devastated Warsaw - and the city's zoo along with it. With most of their animals dead, zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski began smuggling Jews into the empty cages. Another dozen "guests" hid inside the Zabinskis' villa, emerging after dark for dinner, socializing, and, during rare moments of calm, piano concerts.

Joan says: "Very Disappointing, Terrible Narration"
    "Difficult to maintain interest"
    Overall

I was excited to start this book thinking it would give another take on WW2. Listening to the narrator became very distracting in the middle of the book when she would pointedly stop to quote a diary or journal from someone who was in Warsaw during that time. Horrible, Horrible events..... but the value of this story in relating this important history got lost in how the Zookeepers Wife was written and then read.

From the author of The Power of One comes an inspiring human drama of three lives brought together and changed forever by the extraordinary events of recent history. Inspired by real events, Bryce Courtenay's new novel tells the story of three people from vastly differing backgrounds. All they have in common is a tough beginning in life.

Prsilla says: "And a Cast of Thousands!"
    "Long Time Fans"
    Overall

My husband and I are listening to Brother Fish, downloaded because we have been Bryce Courtney fans for years! Listening to this book with a narrator like Humphrey Bower is one of the best experiences I have had as a long time Audible subscriber. Listening to this is an investment in history, in character development and, as usual for Courtney, a wonderful story.
