"I'm Zoe Boutin Perry: A colonist stranded on a deadly pioneer world. Holy icon to a race of aliens. A player in a interstellar chess match to save humanity. Seventeen years old. Everyone on Earth knows the tale I am part of. But you don't know my tale: I'm going to tell it to you now, the only way I know how: not straight but true, the whole thing, to try make you feel what I felt: the joy and terror and uncertainty, panic and wonder, despair and hope."

"ok - but not like Scalzi's other books"

I liked this but it is not a military adventure like ghost or old man wars.

OK if you are a father of a teenage girl you will like this, or are a teenage girl. Other than that it's just too much like a teenage girl story

In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If they like military sci-fi than this is your book.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the tech, well thought out and really adds to the story without being a central overwhelming part

    Any additional comments?

I found myself sitting in the car in the cold to finish chapters. I've not done that in a long time

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

I really enjoy books narrated by Wil Wheaton. So I just found this book one day as looking for my next listen.

What a great little book. I grew up in the 80's and the references are just perfect.

I bit of sci-fi, some great action - funny parts.

I also wonder who else went out and bought RUSH 2112?

Best read of the year for me.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Wil is great, listening to Will is what allowed me to finish this story. Normally I really enjoy John Scalzi's books., but this one it as if he started doing drugs and then threw up a story and we are to be impress with the comic value or something. – I missed the boat on this one.

In this book it starts out great, but then it takes a weird turn - a BAD turn. I won't tell you what he does, but I remember reading a book by Robert A. Heinlein, where the characters take the same turn. I did not like it in the Heinlein book and again not here. Even the ending, it's supposed to be funny/cute but it just comes off bad. Really just a terrible ending – not funny.

I like to immerse myself in the universe created by the author. It's almost as if John Scalzi forgets that. You can’t do that with this book – impossible. Read if your board, as I said Wil Wheaton makes this palatable - or wait for something better from Scalzi is IMHO

A human diplomat creates an interstellar incident when he kills an alien diplomat in a most unusual way. To avoid war, Earth's government must find an equally unusual object: A type of sheep ("The Android's Dream"), used in the alien race's coronation ceremony. To find the sheep, the government turns to Harry Creek, ex-cop, war hero and hacker extraordinaire.

Hey Wil Wheaton rocks in this reading.

The story is mostly a SF detective, political, mystery type story. Not a military action. No SF type battles, almost no military as this story is about politics. Still a good story, it had me going.

I enjoyed Scalzi other work much better

"Great - Miltarty Sci-Fi with lots of action"
    Overall

Lots of action, with a well thought out story line.

I found this series to be really entertaining - especialy if you like powered armor suit combat; Think Startship troopers on steroids. Lots of battles, lots of bad kinda evil non-humans to kill, lots of great ways to kill them.

I espcialy like how each book uses tends to use real geographic features and logistics. I found myself using googlemaps and listening to some of the well thought out battles.

I also liked the Prince Roger series that John co-authored,

"1/2 of book is dedicated to Cally getting laid"
    Overall

I really liked the other Legacy of the Aldenata series. This book however is a bit "over the top" when it comes to Cally and her sex life. The 2nd author in this book is a woman named
    Julie Cochrane.

Cally in this book has sex with every one of the single main charactors, and then a few side people. In one part even her grandpa gets a boner when holder her.

It seems the authors focused on getting Cally laid more than the story line. I find myself thinking - please move this story along and stop all the sex.

Now if you like A LOT of sex in your sci-fi then this is a good book for you.

If not you can skip this book.

The human was an expert sniper-and a psychopath. He had never failed in the past when he stalked human prey. But now he is on an enemy planet, and his prey is anything but human. The Darhel are a race with a highly developed empathic sense. Long ago, they learned that they cannot deal death to another intelligent being without being destroyed by the death agonies of their victim.

"Nothing to do with original series"

I started this book with the thought it would wrap up the series, or be some tyep of continuation. I was not expecting that all the characters from the original series would be gone, the technology different, the storyline different, pretty much everythign different.

I listened to the first two hours, and then gave up, as this could not hold my interest, perhaps I was expecting somethign else. Not sure if it got any better

Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s easy to say that when it comes to sci-fi you either love it or you hate it. But with Ender’s Game, it seems to be you either love it or you love it.... The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Enter Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the result of decades of genetic experimentation.

Kapila says: "6 titles in the series so far"
    "Best series/series"
    Overall

This is perhaps my alltime favorte book and series. I do hope they make the movie (lots of talk but no action).

Even though it is Sci/fi and 20 years old, the technology in this book is not dated. Too many sci/fi focus on the tech but tech is not a major part of this story. It allows the story to happen but nothing more.

If you enjoyed this series, then you might also like Bujold's -Vorkosigan series.
