I have by now read (more heard) many of Murakamis' books and am a big fan. However I would have loved that somewhere it had been mentioned that this book precedes 'Dance, Dance, Dance' - I heard it before and was a bit at a loss in the story. Definetely listen to this one before!

There is basically one main character, so you can't escape him...

Having started with 1Q84 I understand the comments about R. Degas being 'too american' for these tales, but I have come to apreciate his voice because I think he understands the charachters and flows very very much with the stories. 1Q84 is a special issue indeed, but these are fine readings!!

Evil comes in all shapes

I started with the last of Murakami's books, 1Q84, and now I really apreciate the path he's done to get there, it's a fabulous book, really really beautiful. But I enjoy these earlier stories as well, they are more 'crude' and you can see many of the topic he revisits in different ways later on.

This is my preferred book - it is absolutely grand and wonderful. I can't say how much I enjoyed it. I started reading Murakami with this book and I am somehow sorry. I can now see the path he followed from his earlier stories and I probably would have enjoyed the others better if I hadn't discovered 'the end' at the begining.. You can find recurrent themes throughout his works and here they are distilled to the core, like polished diamonds. I loved the pace, the flow, the breathing of the story. The double voices are perfectly interpreted by the readers - congratulations, for me they are the perfect embodiment of the characters, fabulous, amazing. The story is fabulous as always but it takes on a monumental form. I am not sure I could read this on paper, but I was amazed and bewithched by this audiobook. I bow to you, master Murakami! :)

So many! I loved it all the way. I found particularly interesting the historic parts on Manchuria and Mongolia.

The sisters are brilliant. But May is remarcably strong and funny - and the voice Degas gives her will stay in my head forever!

I am a big fan of HM and this is probably my second preferred of his books, right after 1Q84. Very very rich, dense and intersting. Lovely!

Yes, probably. Because it's not a simple book and many of the lines drawn are revealed along the stories and they left me wondering for a long time on many of them.. I would like to revisit them a second time to think them over with a different depht.

The revelation of the interconexion of the two worlds, inner and outer. Classic Murakami, but here explored in a very specific aproach, a bit more on the futuristic side - very interesting ideas! Deserving more thought!

Can't choose.. They are all great. But I had a lot of fun with the Pink Girl :)

This is not my favorite Murakami, but it is so rich in themes that I can't forget it.

IT gets under your skin no matter what.. I had mixed feelings while listening to it but I couldn't get it out of my head afterwords. And it keeps getting back to me.

The 'migration' of souls is a recurrent theme in Murakami and in this book it is very clear and beautifully put. The idea that we can help each other by 'receiving' their souls and doing something on their behalf, with their spirit in us is dramatic but very human and touching.

I loved all of them, as usual. Murakami's chaaracters are all special and rich, 'normal' and unique, universal and japanese all at once.. The readers are perfect for each voice.

It is a pretty special book, even within the many I've read of Murakami. I wouldn't recomend it as a first book of the author, but it's a fantastic book.

I've only hear Degas reading Murakami so I can't compare him to other authors but even with the western accent on a japanese tale I really enjoy his take on the characters.

You really undesrtand this book better if you read 'Wild sheep chease' before, otherwise it might start off a bit messy and you loose the meaning of many elements - the story and some characters follow the other book so it's really richer if you read them in order. Otherwise it's Murakami.. love him or leave him. I love him and can't get enough.

It was my first book by the author and I had no expectations - I was very happily surprised to find out the story is not at all linear and obvious and the writting is clever and funny all the way. I will definetely search for more titles from C. Moore!

The sory is not basic and the writing is really nice. It keeps you up and running all along - and smiling!

He got the character very well and was excellent doing the voices of the secondary ones too. He keeps up the pace of the story, no slowing down, very good.
