This book had both its good and bad points. I really enjoyed learning about the old Afghanistan, its culture, its people. It was interesting to take the viewpoint of an insider as the world changed. The characters are all richly drawn and for the most part all the characters are very likable. That is, aside from the main character, who's so flawed as a person it's distasteful. I finished the book, but wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It's saving grace was that it wasn't a bad ending; not a real feel good, but everything is tied up.
After completing this book, it left me wishing there was more. The characters are so richly drawn and the narration brings them larger than life. This book was enjoyable and will stay with me. Unlike other reviewers, I'm new to this author and can't wait to try another of his books. I will tell everyone I know about this book.
