For more than a half century, Father Damien Modeste has served his beloved people, the Ojibwe, on the remote reservation of Little No Horse. Now, nearing the end of his life, Father Damien dreads the discovery of his physical identity, for he is a woman who has lived as a man. To complicate his fears, his quiet life changes when a troubled colleague comes to the reservation to investigate the life of the perplexing, difficult, possibly false saint Sister Leopolda.

    "Splendid!"

I loved this book. It's an absorbing story told in elegant, textured prose. Some of the images are breathtakingly beautiful. The book's portrayal the main character's faith struck me as both believable and profound. Read this if you're searching for a novel to help you see the world in new ways--or if you're just looking for a really good book. The narrator is fine--even occasionally brilliant.

In The Brothers Karamazov, Dostoevsky explores human nature at its most loathsome and cruel but never flinches at what he finds. The novel tells the stirring tale of four brothers: the pleasure-seeking, impatient Dmitri; the brilliant and morose Ivan; the gentle, loving, and honest Alyosha; and the illegitimate Smerdyakov, shy, silent, and cruel. They are behind the murder of one of literature's most despicable characters: their father. This was Dostoevsky's final and perhaps his finest work.

David says: "superb rendition of Dostoyevsky's greatest novel"
    "Excellent!"

This audiobook was my first encounter with The Brothers Karamazov--what a stunning novel! I'm so glad I finally read it; it lives up to its exquisite reputation. The narrator's slightly nasal and supercilious intonation bothered me a bit at first, but it suits the text. My ear adjusted quickly, and then I savored every word. Read this!

First published in monthly parts from March 1852 to September 1853, this novel follows the fortunes of three pedestrian characters; Esther Summerson, Ada Clare, and Richard Carstone. The story they tell embondies Dickens' merciless indictment of the Court of Chancery and its bungling, morally corrupt handling of the endless case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, giving the novel its scope and meaning.
