Ollie Chandler is a brilliant and quick-witted homicide detective whose First Law is: "Things are not what they appear." So when a university professor is found murdered and the motive looks like revenge, a stunning discovery leads him to an unimaginable conclusion. Could the murderer be a fellow homicide detective? As Ollie probes deeper, another detective is murdered. What is the root of this jumbled, deceptive mess of lies and secrets?

    "Truly deceptive description"
    Overall

The description of the book needs to include the information that this is an evangelical Christian book. A main theme of it is the conversion of the main character and the role of Christianity in the other characters with conversations between the deceased wife and God... It became very irritating to those of us who thought we were simplye buying a mystery.

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache has come to Winter Carnival - not to join the revels but to recover from an investigation gone hauntingly wrong. But violent death is inescapable, even in the apparent sanctuary of the Literary and Historical Society - where an obsessive historian’s quest for the remains of the founder of Quebec, Samuel de Champlain, ends in murder. Could a secret buried with Champlain for nearly 400 years be so dreadful that someone would kill to protect it?

Wonderful dialog. Good old fashioned mystery. Great characters. I went back and listened again as it was a joy to do so. Perfect narrator for the story

An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him. Travis Boyette is such a man. In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high-school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.

Unfortunately he treated this weighty subject in a rather superficial way. It is a very serious subject that deserves all the publicity and consideration it can get. The reaction of the town people was not believable in this day and age, unfortunately.
