Another hit from Audible and Blackstone. I enjoyed this "very tall tale" immensely and would have given it +4 because of all the great visuals it inspires, CGI creators will have fun with the movie. However, with all the research mentioned in the book, the author (Dave Freedman) somehow overlooked the simple fact that there are NO PENGUINS in the Arctic, Walru, Polar Bear and Puffins, YES, but no Penguins. I found this ovesight to be humorous but also dismaying. How could all the editors and the author himself allowed this to go to print?
I have just completed my second and most enjoyable listen of this superb sequel, it is without doubt one of the best works of fantasy yet written. I have been reading and listening to the "masters" for over 70 years and I am certain that Brandon's work is among the very best, he has become one of the "great" writers.
The narration is, as always, by Kate and Michael, superb and to those critics who find this work less than satisfying, well, keep enjoying your particular best and with luck you will eventually learn to appreciate that which is truly inspired, well crafted and a "masterpiece".
Perhaps most listeners would be pleased when they have, early, on. proven themselves right in fathoming the plot and envisioning the end correctly. I, however, was not. Early in this installment of the saga I lost some interest as i felt the final chapters would be obvious, I was right, no surprises. Maybe I have read to much Herbert/Andersson over the years. I am not saying the work is not good, as I did enjoy the visuals generated, but a predictable conclusion, in the end, left me mildly disappointed.
For those of us, who can and do recall this period of history, this story is enlightening and also entreating. It is nice to know that eventually those who deserve the credit for the advance of space exploration are duly recognized. I most whole-heartedly recommend this great listen to anyone who enjoys behind the scene revelation.
Thanks to Audible for this remarkable listen :)
A very good start to what I imagine will be a fine new series of books in the sequel to the saga of seven suns. I wanted to rate this as a five star work, but found portions of the work, in some chapters, too repititious or redundant regarding some of the histories of certain characters, mildly annoyying, as if the listener/reader is unable to retain information.
There are many new and interesting developments in the storyline and a few predictable plot manipulations, so all in all this was a good listen and worth the purchase.
This is a fine story, filled with memorable characters, romance and all the elements of what makes the genre so entertaining. It is given life with the talents of Simon Vance who's narrative is breathtaking.
I eargerly await the next book in the series. Though Mr. Bricks narration is noticeably slower in some chapters, his performance is still amazing, passionate and precise. His characterizations live in the mind, consistent and recogmozeable page after page and book after book. I enjoy the depth and detail, I do not find anything at all unappealing or dreary, as some reviews have stated. Kudos! to Brian and Kevin for their remarkable work over the many years with the imaginative results of the effort of keeping DUNE alive and well.
Not since the "DUNE" series have I had so much pleasure listening to such a complete and fascinating creative construct, full of intrigue, adventure and compelling drama. C.J. Cherryh has written, with very little doubt, a masterpiece filled with unforgettable characters and some of the most original dialogue that populate what feels like a familiar world.
The extraordinary narration by MR. May is phenomenal. What a truly gifted narrator he is, each character is distinct and quite individual, filled with personality and easily recognizeable at the sound of their voice.
I have just completed the second listen, to each of the novels, so far, in this remarkkable series and I am most anxiously awaiting the next book. Thank you AUDIBLE forall the work making this possible.
This is precisely what one would expect from these two amazing writers, lots of wit and good humored barbs at life in general. The telling of the tale by Mr. Jarvis s "spot on" character wise, wonderfully convincing with extraordinary inflection. I could not stop laughing or listening.
Beyond imaginative, dark and humorous, good and evil with very powerful imagery along with a "campy red dragon" who delivers her lines with a psuedo Mae West/Cary Grant accent. The performance is one of the very best in all my listening experiences, highly emotional and exciting.
I find myself at a true loss for words in trying to describe the pleasure this listen has given me. Clive Barker is a most remarkable and gifted storyteller. Galilee, is superb.
