Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

Good read, has its holes and its leaps but the characters are fun and the plot interesting.

Considered by some to be the world's greatest novel, Anna Karenina contains two plots: the tragedy of Madame Karenina, in love with a man who is not her husband; and the story of Konstantine Levin, a sensitive man whose personal philosophy is Tolstoy's reason for writing about him.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    Great novel, poor recording.

What didn’t you like about Nadia May’s performance?

This recording is a transfer from a cassette tape. There are echoes, times when the tape recording is stretched and at least one place where the new cassette is announced. It is not the quality I expect from audible.

In this interview, best-selling author Ann Patchett talks about her most recent novel, Run. She discusses her inspiration for the book, her writing process, and one of the constant themes in her works: what our relationship is to strangers and how we are all connected in a greater family.

Her home shop stood like a bright dwarf among dead giants and burned rubble at the western end of the old strip. The old ones, Harvey's and Caesar's and Harrah's, had been built for a bigger tourist trade. They'd been built for a massive power grid, too. Those still standing were dark, left to crumble, the casinos closed. She wished she could either get them up and running again or just tear the damned things down like they'd tried to do in Vegas before they ran out of workers.

Lee Singer Pseudonym for Shelley Singer and Rochelle Singer is lacking in moral fiber. The lack of depth in her books is matcehd by the lack of depth in her as a person.
    Don't bother.

In Seeking Peace, Mary Pipher tells her own remarkable story, and in the process reveals truths about our search for happiness and love. While her story is unique, "the basic map and milestones of my story are universal," she writes. "We strive to make sense of our selves and our environments." In Seeking Peace, she recounts how she tried to achieve that.

Mary Pipher has had an interesting persepctive on American culture and its impact on our psychoogical growth. About her personal growth however she lacks perspective. This book is redundant, self absorbed, self pitying, and is not related to its title.
Pipher needed a therapist to help her come to terms with her history and the self image that resulted from it. When she had a "polite breakdown" she instead beacme her own therapist. That's about as wise an idea as being your own attorney. With no one but herself to toss around thoughts ideas and felings they don't get resolved, only re-lived perhaps chewed and regurgitated. This was personal memoir in need of a therapist. Not for publication.

With 10 stories that move from the barrios of the Dominican Republic to the struggling urban communities of New Jersey, Junot Diaz makes his remarkable debut. Diaz's work is unflinching and strong, and these stories crackle with an electric sense of discovery.

This book was in dreadful need of a good editor and it didn't find one. It uses Spanish words not familiar to many, without explanation, the plot shifts arbitrarily and the narratives are contradictory from one chapter to the next. It has some redeeming qualities as a sociocultural exploration but i can't recommend it.
