Love her books, the interview irritated me. I found her self agrandizing and annoying.
It took me a while to get into the nook; I found the writing more " telling" me than showing me about the characters, but then I became engaged. I liked the characters, the plot was okay but a bit trite. The writing was spotty, very predictable and cliché ridden at times. The ending was too predictable and too tired. I was very hopeful in the middle of the book that I'd like it the rest of the way through but the ending let me down.
The characters were the best part of the novel.
Great novel, poor recording.
This recording is a transfer from a cassette tape. There are echoes, times when the tape recording is stretched and at least one place where the new cassette is announced. It is not the quality I expect from audible.
Lee Singer Pseudonym for Shelley Singer and Rochelle Singer is lacking in moral fiber. The lack of depth in her books is matcehd by the lack of depth in her as a person.
Good read, has its holes and its leaps but the characters are fun and the plot interesting.
Mary Pipher has had an interesting persepctive on American culture and its impact on our psychoogical growth. About her personal growth however she lacks perspective. This book is redundant, self absorbed, self pitying, and is not related to its title.
Pipher needed a therapist to help her come to terms with her history and the self image that resulted from it. When she had a "polite breakdown" she instead beacme her own therapist. That's about as wise an idea as being your own attorney. With no one but herself to toss around thoughts ideas and felings they don't get resolved, only re-lived perhaps chewed and regurgitated. This was personal memoir in need of a therapist. Not for publication.
This book was in dreadful need of a good editor and it didn't find one. It uses Spanish words not familiar to many, without explanation, the plot shifts arbitrarily and the narratives are contradictory from one chapter to the next. It has some redeeming qualities as a sociocultural exploration but i can't recommend it.
