The subject matter of this book ranges between disturbing (on the bright side) and revolting (on the dark side). I gave the book two stars because given the subject matter, it is written and narrated well. I found the characters somewhat flat and, looking back on the reading/listening experience, can't really decide if I related to any of them. I also took exception with the somewhat bland way some of the more violent issues were addressed.
I'm about a third of the way through the book but Judith Light's narration is so irritating that I don't think I'll be able to listen to the rest of it. She reads this book like she's reading a fairy tale to a kindergartener. Just awful.
I was hoping that I would be able to buy this book on my Kindle and read the parts that Judith Light narrates but it's not offered. What a disappointment!
I am not sure that I would recommend this book in audiobook format. Each of the collection of stories is narrated by a different narrator. Mr. Hosseini and Ms. Aghdashloo were easy to listen to and although they both have an accent, their telling of the story was not intrusive to the story. This was not the case with Mr. Negahban. Heavy accent combined with odd cadence and inflection made for difficult listening. I bought the book in Kindle format so I could read his parts.
The characters were memorable; tragic and sympathetic at once.
No. There was too much to absorb.
Mr. Hosseini's command of the English language is impressive. He is a true wordsmith, much of which is lost in this format. I'm glad I listened to this book, but now I will read it in Kindle format.
First of all, I'm not the 'Nancy Drew', girl heroine, type of reader. But the writing was excellent, the narration spot on; so much so that I gave in! This precocious young lady was as viable a heroine as any grown man. She was tenacious, smart and funny and her travails were delightful. It is nice to listen to a book that is light hearted and well written. Tough combo.
First of all, I am shocked that many of the other reviewers didn't like John Lee's narration. It is extraordinary! I found Roy Dotrice's various "pirate" voices or drunken Irish voices tiresome and invasive. John Lee is awesome!
As with the other books in this series, the story meanders through the lives of the characters, not really landing anywhere but enjoyable none the less. Because I started listening to the series after most of it was complete, this is a big commitment. Stopping really isn't an option. So I expect I will finish this wonderful story, and the next and then I'll need to wait a while for the last two books!
Whew, even if you can forgive the occasional nauseating philosophizing, I would have been much happier if this story was 25% shorter. Not short mind you, Mr. Roberts has a lot to say and spins a great yarn but wow, it sure did go on forever.
On the good side, the characters were fabulous, the adventures both exciting and interesting and the narrator rocked! But really, was it necessary for all the women to be "lovely" with amazing bodies and gorgeous eyes, breasts, etc? Kind of a cheap trick for such a heady book.
I really wanted to love this book; I like Tina Fey (and still do) but this was a lot of nothing about nothing. Ms. Fey is an adequate narrator so I had no issues there, but her life is rather unremarkable and I found myself wondering why she decided to write about it. Well, I got about halfway through, abandoned the effort and went on to something better. Not awful just not really good either.
Great mystery with wonderful characters. Moves along quickly with a great ending.
A pleasure from the beginning. Not being a "dog person", I was scepticle about how I would feel about spending 15 or so hours with a boy and his dog. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this story is about humankind, friendship and trust. The narrator was one of the best I've heard.
This was a my first experience with the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and what a delightful experience it was! Well written and expertly narrated. One of the best I've listened to and I will certainly take another trip to Botswana with them again. Just delightful!
