Okay, so I am a fan of Miranda Hart. And this book and performance doesn't disappoint. I haven't read the paper copy of this, but I can't help but feel that you must miss something if you don't get the joy of Miranda Hart's delivery of her own words. Of course, I might be biased, so sometime I'll have to pick up a copy.
While this is a book about life lessons, and - as she calls them - the 'little moments', it manages to be thoughtful without being preachy. It's also very humorous, and full of the nearly-mortifying anecdotes I expect from Miranda Hart. The device of the narrator speaking to her younger self is also very effective, and somehow, the 2 characters are clearly distinguished to the listener - truly a show of Miranda's talent.
It's a wonderful listen, and I can't recommend it enough.
Okay, so, read my other review(s) on the Discworld novels, this is pretty much rinse and repeat.
Witches + Weatherwax + Pratchett + Planer = and awesome listening experience, no matter what
You really can't get much more enjoyable listening than this series period, and my particular favorites are the Witch books. There are some fantastic reviewers in this series who have done a great job of explaining how/where to start, and I would definitely follow their advice. But know that, in my (err, not so humble really) opinion, you can't go wrong anywhere here. All of the books are fantastic! They're dense and well-written, on top of being laugh-out-loud funny.
So I joined audible to get my hands on the Discworld audiobooks. That should give some warning about the tone of the following review.
This whole series is fabulous, and this particular entry is one of my favorites. I adore the witches, and this book features the original 3 in fine form. Granny Weatherwax will always, always be my favorite, but everyone in here is a great character.
Pratchett is a master wordsmith as well as being a master storyteller, and I will say that there are few authors I would seek out both the audio and print versions of a book for, and he is one of them. Yes, get the audiobook, because it's fantastic, but also, if you find the print version, read that too, because in either media form, there will be new nuances and turns of genius brought to light.
Nigel Planer is a fantastic narrator (both the main narrators of the series are excellent. I truly could not pick my favorite), and this gets two thumbs up from me (take my word for it)!
This is fantastic - and while nothing here is new to someone who's watched her sitcom, it certainly fills the void until the powers that be figure out how to release the seasons in the US (shakes fist).
It translates extremely well, and while I would love it if it were longer, I'll take it! Miranda Hart is wonderfully funny, and I hope this series brings her back!
I am an avid reader of YA books - being of the opinion that they are generally better written and edited (being aimed at younger, more malleable minds seems to mean editors are more diligent about searching out typos - which throw me out of written books like a catapult. There are certainly exceptions to this rule, however.), and am always on the lookout for those books that contain female protagonists. Especially ones that don't fall into the typical damsel tropes. Here Elizabeth Marie Pope succeeded incredibly well. I adore Kate, and her pragmatic and logical view. It might not be the most in character for the typical girl her age, but it worked for me.
The book on a whole is very well written, and the atmosphere is very well-crafted. This is a WELL WRITTEN and WELL RESEARCHED book, and the category shouldn't chase off anyone. Truly, it's that good. The plot is slow to start, but the book is well - if deliberately, paced.
The reader is quite fitting and suits the style of writing very well. Kate doesn't sound like a flighty kid, and I was never jarred in my listening of a book I already knew very well.
I can't recommend this enough - although, to be honest, I think the print form is slightly more of a winner here, the audible is wonderful as well.
