After 17-year-old Charlotte Kane, the beautiful, brilliant, and brooding daughter of a rich widower, disappears on a drunken New Years' Eve snowmobile ride, a raging blizzard soon snuffs out all search efforts. When her body is found during the spring thaw four months later, preliminary evidence implicates her ex-boyfriend: Ojibwe bad-boy Solemn Winter Moon. But then a second Charlotte Kane turns up dead, and Cork isn't sure of anything any more.

Ronna says: "Winter snows leave a body in the spring thaw!!"

I liked the story line. There were plenty of twists and turn in the plot. But the overly forced religious opinion was too much for me and totally ruined the experience of listening to the story. I felt like I was being preached at and manipulated to accept the author's religious views. If all his other books have the same overbearing religious bent, I won't be buying them.

THis was a very well written novel that kept me changing my mind about the perpetrator of the crime all the way through. The voices were perfectly voiced by the narrator and it would have been 5 stars all the way across if not for the unnecesary romance novel tripe . I wish today's authors would realize that stuff is not needed to get the feeling of attraction between two people across to the reader. More and more mystery/crime writers are lowering their quality of writing and taking the easy way out to make their books exciting.
In this case, it was a relatively small part of the story and easily scrolled past so didn't detract so much from the story as to cause me to give up on it.

But Puller quickly discovers that there are others pursuing his brother, who only see Robert as a traitor and are unconcerned if he survives.

First, let me say I detest the sound effects being used in audio books these days and the ones in this book are some of the cheesiest ever. Let us use our imaginations which is what novels are meant to do. We don't need cheap sound effects to "see" what is happening in the story.
Now, the writing in this particular story seemed to be aimed at the possibility of a movie and it would likely be a successful one. But as a book, not as much. It was simplified and "scripted".
The narrators....well, McLarty always reads in a halting, new reader, manner with odd pauses at the end of a line even tho it's not the end of the sentence. His pauses within a sentence are often in the wrong place. And his voice always feels as tho he's yelling at me or that he's deaf and speaking loudly like an older person who is hard of hearing, even when I have the volume down very low. And it's very monotone. Just not a pleasant voice to listen to for me.
Ms Cassidy is ok. She doesn't have that much to read so hard to get a feeling for her but she didn't turn me off to the book.
Overall, it's worth listening to as long as you don't expect the best mystery ever written.

A husband's lies can have deadly consequences. When Juliet Cole's husband of 15 years is murdered before her eyes, she thinks it was a random shooting. Devastated and traumatized, she answers hours of questioning, then returns home to break the tragic news to her boys. But a threatening voicemail takes this from a random shooting to a planned, deliberate attack. Juliet realizes that she and her children are in danger too, unless she meets the killers' demands.

A very formulaic and predictable novel written in the tone of a jr. hi level book. If constantly blaming god for what goes wrong and then praising god for what goes well is your thing, then you'll enjoy this story. I found it repugnant. Put that together with a narrator who sounded like a syrupy kindergarten (apologies to kindergarten teachers) teacher and you have a diabetes inducing listen. I couldn't finish it and didn't care how it ended.

Lisa Jackson's novels of romance and suspense race up the best-seller charts. In Left to Die, the Pinewood County Sheriff 's Department is on the trail of a cold-blooded killer who acts as a savior to women stranded during terrible mountain snowstorms before stripping them of their dignity and leaving them to die, a victim of the elements. But the killer's latest victim managed to escape, leading some to believe there may now be an imposter on the loose.

I had planned on giving this book 5 stars because it kept me guessing and changing my mind about the guilty party until the very end.....and I'm still guessing. I do not appreciate buying a book that requires me to buy yet another one just to find out who did the crime in the current one. This is just a very sneaky and underhanded way to get more money out of the author's readers. I am not sure I will buy the follow up to this book. It's just too much like a bait-and-switch scam.

Powerful entertainment from the crime fiction superstar who combines riveting authenticity with witty, elegant prose. Best selling author Kathy Reichs "keeps the twists coming, and by the novel's climax, she has skillfully interwoven her many subplots and red herrings into a satisfying puddle of sex, sleaze, greed and gore," says Publishers Weekly.

The story line was ok....fairly predictable but still interesting enough to keep me listening despite a lousy narrator. This narrator just didn't sound like Tempe at all. She was flat, stilted and without personality. Apparently this woman was not the narrator I"ve heard on previous Tempe Brennan books and I will avoid any read by her from now on.

In this darkly riveting debut novel - a sophisticated psychological mystery that is also an heartbreakingly honest meditation on memory, identity, and aging - an elderly woman descending into dementia embarks on a desperate quest to find the best friend she believes has disappeared, and her search for the truth will go back decades and have shattering consequences.

As a woman rapidly approaching 70, I did find this novel compelling and also disturbing as a very accurate look into the decline of an elderly person's ability to even control his own thought processes. The "mystery" is the least important part of this story. The story of the gradual breakdown in the character's personality is far more interesting. Having been responsible for the care of my childless aunt who was stricken with Altzheimer's, I can now better appreciate why she acted the way she did and why nothing I did made any difference at all.
    Highly recommended.

If you love fantasy stories, this may be perfect for you....the escapades of the lead characters are so over the top that they seem more like a Superman or Batman story. The conversations are written like they were made by a grade school author...flat, simple and not the way real people talk. The male narrator had a stilted reading manner , pausing at odd places as if it were the end of the sentence ....and then going on with the remainder of the sentence.
I thought it would never end.

In 1993, Marie Gesto disappeared after walking out of a supermarket. Harry Bosch worked the case but couldn't crack it, and the 22-year-old was never found. Now, more than a decade later, with the Gesto file still on his desk, Bosch gets a call from the district attorney. I almost quit listening because of the flat, halting tone of the narrator. He doesn't "perform" the story but just reads it in a flat , monotone voice and halts or pauses in odd places. But I stayed with it and really did enjoy the story itself.

At once naturalistic epic, captivity narrative, road novel, and transcendental gospel, Steinbeck’s, The Grapes of Wrath is perhaps the most American of American classics. Although it follows the movement of thousands of men and women and the transformation of an entire nation during the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s, The Grapes of Wrath is also the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads, who are forced to travel west to the promised land of California.

I don't give many 5 star ratings. I listen to too many books to be impressed by many of them but I honestly wish I could give both this book and this narrator 10 stars. They were perfectly matched and I did not want this story to end.
Like most people of my generation (mid 60's), I read this book in high school and found it boring and didn't like it at all. It is wasted on the young who haven't faced any hardships in life yet and they can't possibly understand the impact of it's lessons.
But now when I listen to it I can feel the dust in my throat and the bugs biting my skin and the heat beating down on me. I know the pain of the parents watching their children starve and the humiliation of the men , especially, who could not take care of their families.
And, I could see how we as a country are starting to repeat those same mistakes that culminated in the massive poverty of the majority of Americans in those years.
This is a must read for all adults.

Where to start with this bit of junk writing. If you like violent, explicit sex with very little story line....you'll love this. It goes off track even more with the rapid growth of bed bugs exposed to radiation. Really?
And, to make matters worse, what story is there needs to be read by a male narrator. It just doesn't fit a female's soft voice. This woman did a decent job I guess considering she had little to work with.
I won't be buying any more from this author.
