"Super historical Snaphsot with Insight into TR"
This book delivered. I LOVE listening and reading all kinds of books. I probably prefer sci-fi and fantasy, but like everything. Books like this and 1776 are compelling and interesting. They transport you to a different time and place and what you get when you walk away is a glimpse of insight into one of history's most interesting characters. I've long admired Teddy Roosevelt and still savor the tiny insights into his personality and character that this book left.
In short, a darn good story, with a good performance, and a captivating lead character. I'd give it 4.5 across the board and tried to reflect that in my ratings.
"Favorite book of 2011! Great for Hunger Games fans"
Fantastic sorry. Great characters. Fascinating world. Gripping plot. Get this!
If you liked Hunger Games, Trudi Caravan books, Fire by Kristin Cashore, or Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, and/or Ready Player One, we may share tastes in audiobooks. And if we do, you will LOVE this book more than many of those!!!
Flat out my favorite book I downloaded in 2011. An excellent entry in this genre!
"Another Solid Entry of a Favorite Series"
If you love this series like I do, you know what you are going to get. Laughs! Great characters. A superb narration. And plenty of drama that never feels formulaic.
If you aren't familiar with this series, then what are you waiting for. Click on David Rosenfelt. Start from the beginning and ENJOY! This is one of the only series with such short entries (in terms of time) that I would say are worth the credit and more. Simply delightful!
"Can't endorse, won't continue with series"
I wanted another series. I thought I could become a Stephen King fan. This topic intrigues me.
Unfortunately, I've never met a George Guidall narration I could even remotely tolerate. I somehow missed it was him. Wish I could get my credit back. Still, I went forward. I just loathe his narration. I've never met a single listener who has ever said the same thing and don't expect anyone to agree with me. His voice is just like nails on a chalkboard (but worse) for me. There may be no rhyme or reason to it, but I've listened to about 8 books and end up loathing them all because it just gets to me.
And no, I'm not picky. Grover Gardner, Kate Reading, Scott Brick, or the author themselves are all usually great with me. Just not him.
"Disappointing limp to the finish of beloved series"
I thought this series was getting stronger. I believed and looked forward to this conclusion for a long time. I bought the book even though I hadn't bought any others.
It just left me disappointed. It was really GREAT for 70% of the way. But then it simply fizzled. It ran out of emotional oomph and wandered from what made it special.
Worth listening to. Worth completing the series. But somehow lessens overall a series that probably needed its strongest installment in order to become great. Take it for what it is: an ending and not a compelling conclusion.
Enjoy, but don't get over-excited and try to make the series into something it's not.
"A Book that Adds to a Series that MUST be Read!!"
If you like Brandon Sanderson, Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, Timothy Zahn, Suzanne Collins and many authors like them, you should listen to this book.
Patrick Rothfuss is an author. He's not just a writer. He has built a world and crafted characters. This is the second installment in a series. It is fantastic in its own right and leaves this listener hungry for more.
I simply love this series. I wish EVERYONE would read or listen to it. There are magic in these pages and minutes of listening to this book. There are deep characters who grow as the book progresses. There is an interesting story, a great world, and polished writing.
This series is not for everyone. But there is simply so many things to love about this book and this audio version that this reviewer finds himself hoping EVERYONE listens so Rothfuss can get the attention and following he so richly deserves!
"For Your Daily Testosterone Boost"
Lots to like about this continuation of a solid series. Guns. Fights. Fun narration by Bronson Pinchot. In short, it's a solid testosterone-pumping novel with lots to like.
"Exactly What You'd Expect"
Another solid installment in a light, fun, good series that is well-narrated. I like books like this that are easier to digest while gasping for air on the treadmill or fighting crazy New Jersey drivers in traffic. This series is very solid and improves from beginning to end. I'd essentially give it 3.5 stars for story and overall, but bumped it to an average of 4 because it is one of the better installments in the series and the narration is so solid.
"Most recommended book of 2011-12"
I read A LOT. I'm now approaching 500 audiobooks in my collection. I also read 30-60 additional books a year on my Kindle.
Let me put it this way: I loved this book soooooo much while I was I reading it on my Kindle, that I used a credit so I could listen to it while I drive (which I do a lot for work). That is how compelling this story is. Throw it in the category of books that are under-appreciated, under-read and under-the-radar. I even found myself reading little insights to my fiancé as I read it.
Bottom line: this book a well-written, great story, with interesting characters. I have recommended this book to more friends, who like different kinds of books, than any other book I read in the last two years. To me, it has mass appeal.
If you like good characters, get this book. If you like great, well-written stories, get this book. If you like fantasy stories, get this book. If you like books when the characters seem to have super-human powers, get this book. If you like books that are not predictable but are compelling page-turners, get this book. You WON’T regret it.
"Pulse-pounding, Addictive, and Delightful!"
I love this book on so many levels. I have 470+ audible books. Written less than 10 reviews. I considered getting this one about 6 times before I finally used a credit and boy am I glad I did.
I LOVE this book in at least the following ways :
(1) good characters – like all of the best books, it becomes easy to root for the protagonists and characters. The main protagonist is smart but young. He’s imperfect, easy to root for, but also very skilled. He also has opportunities to take an easy path or do the right thing several times and his choices seem human and believable to me.
(2) good world building – this story takes place in a world that is so much like our own, but not far off from where could end up within a few years. What you get is a sense of the direction we may be heading technologically, socially, governmentally, and economically. This makes the “world” created in the story feel possible, and almost realistic, at the same time it is a fantastical alternate reality that is cleverly built.
(3) plot, tension, and captivating story – this story MOVED for me. It was so engaging. The dual levels of the characters “searching” for the easter egg and doing so with competition drives this along, thanks to excellent pacing by the author in terms of when to speed up time, or focus in on event.
(4) cultural references – a lot of great references to the 80s, as others have written. The juxtaposition of the 80s which seems this time of purity, family values, and prosperity, with now and with the alternate reality created in the book is skillfully done.
In short, get this story.
NARRATION: I will say for me that as opposed to other books, I was a bit neutral on the narrator. What was great, is that there was not a lot to complain about. I didn’t “notice” the narration like I did in those books/narrators who can become annoying. But for me at least, it didn’t stand out as a reason to get this book either. This is in fact, why I put off getting this audiobook for so long. PLEASE learn from my mistake! Get this delightful story, which is so fully enthralling, that I actually sped up the narration speed some times just to try to know what happened next even more quickly.
What a great story! I look forward to listening to this story again and again. There is no greater compliment than that!
