"This one wasn't for us"
We didn't finish this one. It got a bit complicated and we just couldn't get into it.
"Sort of old fashioned crime novel but I loved it"
There was something about this story. It felt dated but something about it was really enjoyable. The strong American voice, the policeman that was thwarted at every turn by people who were supposed to be on his side, all made me wonder why I was enjoying the story so much. It must have been because the story was well told and I listened to it every opportunity I could till I knew the ending. It was a page turner.
"Excellent mystery"
I really enjoyed the plot and found the characters believable. The backdrop of the Norfolk salt marshes created a wonderful damp wind blown atmosphere and in my mind's eye I could see it's beauty and feel it. The narration by Jane McDowell was just right for me. An excellent mystery.
"Loved it!"
This story was a lovely ramble through the life of Mary Delaney. It isn't a subject that I thought I'd enjoy but I did because it is very well written and narrated and Mary Delaney was extra-ordinary.
"An intriguing story"
The narration of this story was just right and the story itself was intriguing. I enjoyed it.
"Loved this one! Perfect story and narrated well"
The author uses an unusual backdrop to this story, that is, lexicography. The building of the story, piece by piece was at a pace just right for me and the characters were given a wholeness which made the story perfect. Excellent work!
"Interesting story but doesn't hold my attention"
This is an interesting story. I'm not sure I'll get through it. The story is interesting and so is the narration but I don't know that I'm all that interested in the ins and outs of opium eating. I selected it because its a very famous story and many people put it on their lists of must reads. So its selection is part of my desire to catch up on "famous" reads to see why the books are so famous. So far, the "famous" books I've attempted have not been able to hold my attention. I have the same problem with the "classics" so it's probably just me and not the book itself.
"What will I do when the alphabet runs out?"
I just love this series, we're only up to N for Noose so we've got lots more to go. The story is excellent and the narration is spot on. I just wish the stories weren't "abridged".
"An interesting story but I had to give up . . ."
I believe this is an interesting story it was just a little too strange for me so I had to give up on it after getting to chapter 25. I have many books on my reading list and I found I wasn't looking forward to "what happened next". I was reading it as the July 2011 choice of the #1book140 Twitter book club. I'm not sorry I started it because it introduced me to a story way out of my usual square. It strengthened my reading muscle.
"Short but good ... enjoyed it"
This was the first book of Tim Winton's I've read. I've heard so much about his writing. I wasn't disappointed. It was a short story about the sea, beautifully described, and a family who were part of its beauty.
