Roger Ebert is the best-known film critic of our time. He has been reviewing films for the Chicago Sun-Times since 1967, and was the first film critic ever to win a Pulitzer Prize. He has appeared on television for four decades, including twenty-three years as cohost of Siskel & Ebert at the Movies. In 2006, complications from thyroid cancer treatment resulted in the loss of his ability to eat, drink, or speak. But with the loss of his voice, Ebert has only become a more prolific and influential writer.

How could the performance have been better?

Narration was boring along with the story. Get Rob Lowe's book...you won't be sorry.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Would you listen to The Help again? Why?

I would. I loved the four female narrators. Each one made the story more wonderful.

Two years ago, Eva Khatchadourian's son, Kevin, murdered seven high-school students, a cafeteria worker, and an algebra teacher. Because he was only 15 at the time, he received a lenient sentence and is now in a prison for young offenders. Telling the story of Kevin's upbringing, Eva addresses herself to her estranged husband through a series of letters. Fearing that her own shortcomings may have shaped what her son has become, she confesses to a long-standing ambivalence. How much is her fault?

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a riveting story and I was on the edge of my seat, unable to turn it off. Beautiful written.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Kevin, of course.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

This story is not for the faint at heart, but it's so well written. The author is english, so her take on violence and nature vs nurture is very interesting. Being a mother is totally the hardest job out there.

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands.

Would you consider the audio edition of Where'd You Go, Bernadette to be better than the print version?

    Loved the narrator. Sweet story.

What does Kathleen Wilhoite bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator gave this story so much personality.

    Any additional comments?

I purchased this book the day after I returned home from 2 weeks in Antarctica. I had no idea Antarctica was such a part of this story so I enjoyed it even more having just done that trip.

Never mean-spirited or salacious, Lowe delivers unexpected glimpses into his successes, disappointments, relationships, and one-of-a-kind encounters with people who shaped our world over the last 25 years.
