I absolutely LOVED this book. It has so many different dimensions and layers. There is the overall story of
The ending gave me goose bumps and made me cry. I never saw it coming and I am usually good at seeing where a story line is going. I loved being so completely surprised!
Hope did a wonderful job with characters and accents. Even with two Americans I could always tell who was speaking by her voice inflection; a skill I think is amazing. Her voice was perfect for this story and I loved listening to her.
I didn't want the story to end; I wanted to keep reading. I feel like these characters have become real to me and I want to know what happens hext!
I loved this book. I am a huge Bill Bryson fan and have read or listened to many of his other books. I really like his style and I enjoy his voice as a reader. I learned SO MANY things in this book! I found it fascinating to learn how homes (and their people) have evolved over the last several centuries. So many of the modern conveniences that we take for granted (hot water, indoor plumbing, beds without lice, clothes that don't threaten to kill you) are relatively recent innovations. There are so many topics here - diseases, childbirth, clothing, child labor laws, furniture, architecture - you name it. I think Bryson did a brilliant job (and lots of research) to make each story fascinating and relevant. It gave me a great perspective on how good we really have it! Highly recommend it.
I LOVED this book. I am huge fan of historical fiction and this was a wonderful combination of current science/technology/suspense with historical action. I had a hard time walking away from it and wanted to keep listening! The narrator did a great job, which is really important to me. I was fascinated by Crichton's statements about technology, as well as about our misperceptions about history and the Middle Ages. The discussion about risk and "educated guesses" in science was very well done. I enjoyed all the characters and the suspense involved in weaving the story. Highly recommend this book!!!
