  • The Good Soldier

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Ford Madox Ford
    • Narrated By Ralph Cosham
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Good Soldier is a story about the complex social and sexual relationships between two couples - one English, one American - and the growing awareness of American narrator John Dowell of the intrigues and passions behind their orderly Edwardian façade. It is Dowell’s attitude - his puzzlement, uncertainty, and the seemingly haphazard manner of his narration - that makes the book so powerful and mysterious. In Ford’s brilliantly woven tale, nothing is quite what it seems.

Jefferson says: "The Clueless Cuckold and the Romantic Philanderer"
"I was glad to finally reach the end...."
Would you try another book from Ford Madox Ford and/or Ralph Cosham?

If this is the authors style of writing, I will not try to find another by him. Perhaps others like this dry "story by the fireside" type of novel, but I found it extremely boring, the characters very dry, and the action non-existent...much like an English play.

What do you think your next listen will be?

My next listen will be something with action, drama, character. Maybe a war story!! Anything to revive my listening experience.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Ralph Cosham?

I doubt I will listen to him again.

Was The Good Soldier worth the listening time?

    Any additional comments?

I read other reviews before I purchased this book. Many of them said this was a very good book. Perhaps we just have very different definitions of what is "very good".

  • The American Civil War

    • ORIGINAL (24 hrs and 36 mins)
    • By The Great Courses, Gary W. Gallagher
    • Narrated By Professor Gary W. Gallagher

Between 1861 and 1865, the clash of the greatest armies the Western hemisphere had ever seen turned small towns, little-known streams, and obscure meadows in the American countryside into names we will always remember. In those great battles, those streams ran red with blood-and the United States was truly born.

    "Very good lecture....with some "opinion""
    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed listening to this lecture series. The breaks between the various lectures was a little annoying, but it did offer a means of finding a good "stopping point".
I found two faults with this lecture though. First was his "opinion" thrown in at various points. He was very clear at those times however and stated it was his opinion. I am no professor, but I will just say, I disagreed with one or two of his "opinions".
I did find one other fault, but it was more to do with the recording than with the lecture. When I down loaded my Audible book, it came with 4 parts. Part 1 and 2 followed chronological order just fine. but something happened between Part 2 and 3. Part two ended with Joseph Hooker loosing at Chancellorsville and Part 3 begins with Grant heading for Chattanooga. There is a WEALTH of history between those two points in time. I was really looking forward to hearing his thoughts on Grants campaign to Vicksburg and Johnsons conduct across South Alabama and South Mississippi. Since no one else has has reported or commented on this problem, perhaps it was just my download. :-(
Overall the lecture is very good and very well laid out.
