  • Peter the Great: His Life and World

    • UNABRIDGED (43 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Robert K. Massie
    • Narrated By Frederick Davidson

This superbly told story brings to life one of the most remarkable rulers––and men––in all of history and conveys the drama of his life and world. The Russia of Peter's birth was very different from the Russia his energy, genius, and ruthlessness shaped. Crowned co-Tsar as a child of ten, after witnessing bloody uprisings in the streets of Moscow, he would grow up propelled by an unquenchable curiosity, everywhere looking, asking, tinkering, and learning, fired by Western ideas.

    Susan says: "detailed history"
    "Excellent Book!"

This audio version of a fantastic book is perfect. The narrator is grand, capable of pronouncing russian names without a problem, and keeping the right rythm, not reading to slow or to quickly.
The book is written, grouping the events and actions surrounding certain persons or places, or stages and attitudes of Peter's life, into chapters. It does not progress chronologically from event to event, be they unrelated, that the reader would soon feel themselves asking "who is he? and how does he relate?" It is excellently structured, it reads well. I give it a top notch rating.

  • Hero: The Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia

    • ABRIDGED (14 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By Michael Korda
    • Narrated By Robin Sachs

Michael Korda's Hero is the story of an epic life on a grand scale: a revealing, in-depth, and gripping biography of the extraordinary, mysterious, and dynamic Englishman whose daring exploits and romantic profile, including his blond, sun-burnished good looks and flowing white robes, made him an object of intense fascination, still famous the world over as "Lawrence of Arabia".

Ron says: "Excellent book and narration"
    "An interesting book."

Excellent book. Very well written. I cast no judgements on the author nor the narrator. It is an interesting book delving into the complicated mindset of Lawrence, his life and the way he changed others.
I am not sure about the title. Was he a hero? He did many things, many things people thought where impossible. But his heroism in arabia cast a shadow that he could not live up too. I enjoyed the audiobook very much, until he returned to England. After he returned to England, his war fatigue seemed to drive him to be completely useless. Chased by the media, shuffling from home to home. I could not help but feel that, after a period of rest, he should either settle down and start living, or get up and do something. After Arabia, he led an empty life.
He was not a hero all the time. But in our imperfect world. He did a fine job.
    Cheers Lawrence!

  • Leviathan

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 20 mins)
    • By Scott Westerfeld
    • Narrated By Alan Cumming
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

It is the cusp of World War I, and all the European powers are arming up. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ fabricated animals as their weaponry. The Leviathan is a living airship, the most formidable airbeast in the skies of Europe.

Tahlia Merrill says: "Wonderful, but don't forget to buy the book"

I loved it! I would recommend this to any listener. The author created a magnificent world full of intriguing possibilities, hinting at the world beyond the scenes. The narrator was one of the best readers i have ever come across. His accents are perfect and really immersed the listener into the world. Truly a grand piece of work.
