This updated version is worth the listen even if you have the first edition because it is filled with real life examples of people who went through with the steps in the first book and were successful.
I wish there would've been some people who didn't make it and why. I feel like a lot of people wouldn't have been successful due to family responsibility. There isn't much advice for people who are married and have children. Tim is obviously single at the time of writing and able to focus on things without family responsibility.
This book makes you want to get up and do something...but sometimes reality hits if your spouse isn't going along with your ideas.
Excellent read and resources...
I wanted to like this book and the idea intrigues me, but the author fails to pull it off. It feels to me like he saw something cool on TV about microbots or something and decided to write an entire series around that. It doesn't work. The characters (the high school kids) lack internal struggles and demons that are needed to sustain interest. The adult characters are more interesting, but predictable. You really do not care what happens to any of them... I still don't know the purpose for some of the characters who just showed up and then died... My main criticism is that there is TOO MUCH SCIENCE to keep it enjoyable! I love the science part of sci-fi, however, this guy constantly sends a deluge of scientific fact from the mouth of kids and it unnecessarily weighs down the story and action. I do not NEED to know every line from the wikipedia page on this advanced alien technology! Just give me an explanation and I can look it up for myself. The characters, story and any suspense are overshadowed (unfortunately) by all this crap. It was also very annoying how after the teenagers made a new discovery into the alien technology, they look at their watch and yell "oh crap! I'm late for dinner! I need to get on my bike and ride home as fast as I can before I get grounded!" or something to that nature. Is the book for teens? I can't see a teen enjoying it. The ending was not an ending and I will not be following up with the next one. I was able to listen at 2X speed and the naration was tolerable. I knew beforehand that this was YA genre, but it sounded interesting and I do like other YA novels. This one just didn't have any KICK to it, which is why I have stopped half way through... and I hate doing that. The characters were likable, the opportunity for mystery and suspense is there, it is just not executed! Bummer. It's like watching Scooby Doo where you know nothing serious is going to happen. It might work for younger folks, but it failed to keep me hooked. However, the narration was really good and I listened comfortably at 2X speed while it lasted. I hope this helps someone. I am not opposed to YA novels and this one sounded interesting in the publishers summary, but immediately the protagonist exuded a whiny and indecisive manner. She is over emphasizing the day dream of her "almost kiss" with the young man she is infatuated with. Skip this one if you want some serious suspense. Hope this helps. I cannot comment on the story because I cannot listen to the entire book. It does sound interesting, but like Twilight, the narration is much too juvenile. I understand it is probably a YA novel and therefore the narration of that type making sense, but its just not bearable for me. LISTEN TO THE AUDIO SAMPLE FIRST. My wife did listen to the complete book and loved it. If this helped you, please click YES below. Later.
I am assuming this book is a series? This book starts off in the middle of action without a shred of what the heck is going on. This, in itself, is not problematic, but the fact that it never stops and continues without any foundational elements makes it quite boring. Even with evil, "unwholesome" creatures lurking everywhere, it is not interesting because there hasn't been any character development. Also, the audio is like Dirty Harry reading every line. This is annoying, especially when someone looks around and the text says "there was nothing there", but it is read as though imminent danger is upon them. I would avoid this one. Hope this helps. Please DO NOT look up this book on Wikipedia before reading it! It will dilute the impact of the story. Trust me! I haven't read such a lengthy novel since World Without End and this is comparable. The time frame spans around 200 years. This story gives the reader a renewed perspective of slavery and racism and heightens our sensitivity to the issue. The narrator did a superb job handling the African accents as they transformed into American southern accents. There were some harsh interjections of historical accounts that felt forced, but added to the situation. I listened comfortably on 1.5X speed. Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to use a credit on this one. If any of this review helped, please click YES below. Later.
I knew this was at least a movie in the 50's or 60's, so I thought I would give it try, but boy was I surprised at the content. It is centered around the life and actions of an 18 year old woman who is unrestrained in her expression of language and sexuality. What I would've thought was highly taboo when this piece was written is clearly celebrated by the young woman... and questionably by the author. Constant references (and sometimes discussion) on dykes, lesbians and other controversial issues were plastered on my ear drums from the mouth of the young lady. To me, this was unnecessary and may be something the author felt like expressing, but I was caught off guard by only reading the publisher's summary. It actually sounds interesting. The narrator does a good job and I listened comfortably at 1.5X speed. If any of my review helped, please click YES below.Later.
Once, I was very sick in college and couldn't sleep for several nights. I had one channel whose programming went off at 10 pm... but I had Lonesome Dove VHS tapes! I bet I watched that movie 5 times that week! I haven't watched the movie since then (20 yrs ago), but will soon as a result of reading this book. Here is something that you might want to consider before getting the Audible version: The narrator does a superb job in distinguishing the voices of the characters and really sounds a lot like Gus and Call from the movie, which made it enjoyable. However, while the narrator was excellent, the audio quality was pretty poor. Gus, who we are told has a loud voice, is recorded at a louder volume than most of the other reading. This creates too much difference between the quiet narration and the loud and detracts somewhat from the story. It is not a deal breaker though. I listened at 1.25X speed to retain the narrators accents, but you could listen comfortably at a faster speed if you need to. I definitely think you should use a credit right now. Why the heck did it take 12 chapters before the main characters reunited?! I'm setting here, hour after hour, chapter after chapter, waiting on something to get started. It is 20 chapters in before anything suspenseful takes place. It's not that the entire book is a flop, but good gosh, I'm use to books throwing you under a train in the first few chapters! It's a lot of character development in the first part and it's slow, but you will eventually get there. I did like how the author injected flashbacks of the women's childhood so you get the anchoring event of the story from different perspectives. I'm not sure how I feel about how the book ended... I am left somewhat unsatisfied. There is a lot of vulgar language in this, which was a bit too much in my opinion. Also, the English accent is very heavy and distracting until you get used to it. Please listen to the sample audio like I should have. I listened comfortably at 1.5X speed. This is my 100th book review on Audible! Yay me! I hope this helps someone. If so, click YES below. Later.
I want to enjoy this book because of the historical account, but I just can't get into it. Because of the need to tie into actual historical events, it is too weighted with raw historical data and that imposes on the character development. Those inserts read like they are being read from Wikipedia. It just didn't work for me. Also, the narration was okay, but the recording wasn't. You often hear mouth noises and exhalations. Listen to the audio sample. I was able to follow on 1.5X speed. I hope this helps someone. If it helped you, click the YES button below. Later.
