NO SPOILER. I really like this concept and liked how the details of mind reading were being flushed out... BUT all that was overshadowed by the amount of vulgar language among other things. I am not opposed to vulgarity in books when the situation calls for it... in fact I think it belongs there. HOWEVER, the normal conversations of the characters in this story are flooded with cussing. I hate it when this happens because it really takes the focus off the story to me. Authors, you do not have to be vulgar to be relevant! Also, because the main character can enter into other peoples minds, the author included some intrusive sexual content that was distasteful. The characters needed more development before you would care what happens to them. It had the feel of Harry Potter in a way... the main character was sheltered from a world he would soon discover. The narration wasn't bad and I listened comfortably at 2X speed. I would not use a credit on this one. Just listen to the sample first and see if you like what you hear. NO SPOILER. Although not a novel idea, Howey creates a fun story about alternate realities. It's modern and written well. I wouldn't mind having a full length on this one. I didn't feel that this particular narrator was a good fit for this book. He has a rather ominous voice when half the time is spent discussing basic events of daily life. However, I listened comfortably at 2X speed. If any of this was helpful, please click YES below. Later.
Okay. I am not a literary professional. I like to read however and grabbed this deal of the day simply to add Tolstoy to my library. The story was fine. You cannot compare it with the novels of today, but it has just as much depth in the themes is confronts... What does it mean to live? What does it mean to die? What of those close to you whose lives are affected by your life and death? The narration was good and I listened comfortably at 1.5X speed. I wouldn't use a credit on this, but the price is reasonable enough to go for it anyway. If this was helpful, please click YES below. Later.
This is a novella. It's a filler story of the main book. This one doesn't have the holding power of the first book because you have already learned about Epics and powers and know the characters. You come into this with the cool stuff known and its just figuring out one more Epic ability/weakness. Snooze... the narration was good and I listened at 1.5X speed comfortably. NO SPOILER. I will be honest, there are female authors who, to me, fail to capture the "maleness" of the male species. Rice in this novel is one of them. Sure, you could say "Louie was a vampire and not a man and things changed" or whatever, but Louie just does not act like a male. It not that he was too emotional, just lacking a LOT of testosterone! I was almost repulsed by the lack of physical attraction and his inner thoughts and feeling were very obviously feminine because I know how men think and Louie did not share our feelings in a lot of his situations. His constant attraction and desire for other male vamps was nauseating. Rice explores themes like God, humanity, morals, etc. After about halfway through the book the action becomes more spotty and much concentration is given to the relationships in Paris. There is hardly any more interaction with the interviewer until the end... which itself is unsatisfying. I hunger for no more. If you are a guy, I would find some other vampire series to check out. My wife is not going to be able to finish it, although I did complete the book. The narration was excellent and I listened at 2X speed comfortably most of the time. I decided to try a Reacher story after enjoying the 2012 film. I did enjoy the depth of the mystery. When you thought you had it figured out a new twist would emerge and that's how it should be for a successful story. Child keeps you guessing until the very last minutes of the book. Things that I find in an enjoyable audio book are characters you actually care about, a suspenseful plot that keeps moving and keeps you guessing and good narration. There was not an excessive amount of vulgar language for a crime novel nor explicit detail of immoral activities, which was nice. Overall, for the age of this story, it works well. If the reader isn't old enough to remember a time before cell phones and social media, it may not seem very realistic. I didn't mind spending a credit on this and will probably check out another Reacher book in my future. The narration was really good and I listened comfortably at 1.5X speed. READ THIS. NO SPOILER. You cannot compare novels like this one to novels in the same genre today. That's like saying the athletes of several generations past could compete on par with athletes today. It's not a fair comparison. For the time period this story was engaging and probably suspenseful. Compared to today's standard however, it is not. The characters are likable, but shallow. The focus of the story is the adventure, whereas today there is a lot of focus on the inner struggles and personal conflicts of the main characters. There are actually some twists that were unexpected to me which helped boost the repetitive struggle to survive in the wild. Overall, I would add this to your collection of listens. The narration was excellent and helped keep me in the story. I listened comfortably at 1.5X speed. If any of this was helpful, please click YES below. Later.
The first two narrators felt somewhat distracting from the story due to their stage acting quality. The last story's narrator was better. I actually liked reading rather than listening on this particular series because of that. Listen to the sample first. If this was helpful, please click YES below. Later.
NO SPOILER... Let's get right to it. I saw this come across my email this morning and because I absolutely loved Abe, I was listening within minutes, HOWEVER, there isn't that special WOW factor in this novel like was found in Abe. Henry just isn't as interesting of a central character to pull off a sequel. Sure, there are items to look up on Wikipedia, but because the structure of "this is Henry's life story" there are rather boring visits to highlights in history. What makes Abe work is 1) the central character is an interesting and beloved real life person 2) there was a single purpose and significant mission to focus on 3) you are learning awesome things about vampires as you go along. In this book, Henry is completely made up and not significant in history, there is no life-or-death mission that MUST be accomplished and you already know all the cool stuff about the vampires. It would have been more exciting to have came across a new breed of vamps or some sci-fi twist to stay focused on vampires, heck... I would've taken werewolves... but alas... nothing. The narration was good and I listened comfortably at 1.5X speed, but I'm not sure I would spend a credit on it knowing what you know now... If any of my reviewed was helpful, click YES below. Later.
I like time travel novels. I have read all that I can find on Audible. Koontz' "Lightning" happens to be one of my favorite time travel books, but this one just didn't cut the proverbial mustard. The writing really feels sophomoric for most of the book. For instance, Koontz constantly removes the suspense and danger the characters find themselves in by telling the listener things like "but he was okay" or "it looked horrific, but she was alive"... the reader needs to wonder about the results of an event before just telling them the outcome. Another thing that bugged me was that when Koontz felt that the reader needed some information that is not common knowledge to make sense of something, it was abruptly inserted and felt like it was read from Wikipedia. It somewhat disrupted the flow of thought. The climax was not that great either. The narrator could have been better. I listened comfortably at 1.5X speed. I don't think I would use a credit on this one, but wouldn't hesitate on grabbing Lightning. If any of my review helped, please click YES below. Later.
