Ready Player One is nothing but a series of lists: lists of movies, lists of videogames, lists of TV shows, lists of pen and paper roll playing games, etc. It is interminable. The amount of geek pandering in this book is off the charts. The author name drops Gary Gygax 8 times in the first 6 chapters for no other reason than to say

Wil Wheaton did a fine job reading the book. In fact it was probably his narrative skill that kept me listening for a while. He seemed very invested and enthusiastic. His pace was a touch slow but easy to follow and well modulated enough so that it didn't sound monotonous even though the writing was. Well, I'm going to sound like a broken record here but that's okay because so does this book. If I could edit one thing it would be the endless lists and references. I firmly believe that if one were to remove all the redundant lists and references - only the redundant ones mind you, as I said he name drops Gary Gygax 8 times in 6 chapters - Ready Player One would be shorter by a full third.

Ready Player One confuses mentioning an object of nostalgia with having something to say about that nostalgia. It is the '80s geek equivalent of a Friedberg/Seltzer parody film (ie. Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, Date Movie) where all they do is recreate scenes from other films as if to say
