one of lee child's best. loved the narration, story great!!! totally enjoyed it.
Hugely enjoyable story. Gruesome, gory and gripping. I loved the story but the narration ever so slightly over the top in some places. But hey that sort of added to the fun. I think the best book in the series so far. Loved the Mother Night character. And Ghost and his delicate eating habits. (I think Ghost should pair off with Maggie, from 'Suspect'. By Robert Crais - I think)
But the ending seemed a bit rushed. The only let down. Am really looking forward to the next book. An 'appointment to listen'!
A job well done Mr Author and Narrator.
I love this author and was really pleased to have his books on Audio, having read all of them.
Really well thought out story and good world-building. Narration was top notch too. But the swearing.... What a potty mouth Mr Gustainis has! (I never really noticed it in the print version somehow).
He needs to wash his mouth out with soap! Seriously, it's a good listen and I'm going to download the others in the series.
I enjoyed this story. An original idea. Very interesting. I will certainly be on the lookout for the other books in the series.
The narration was generally good and the characters well read. But, the appalling, terrible attempt at a Northern Irish accent just kept pulling me out. What was that? More like Scottish, West Country, with a bit of god know what else thrown in. If narrators can't do accents properly, then don't narrate a story! Get someone else to do it. Given that the character Never played an important part in the book, this was a constant distraction. I nearly gave up because of this.
However, I'm glad I didn't after all, because the ending certainly leaves you wanting more.
A fantastic story, wonderfully read. Absolutely flawless.
I think this is the best series I have downloaded in 5 years plus of listening to Audible with about 600 books in my library.
The ending, what a shocker!!!!!
I would LOVE to hear more about Bartimaeus.
Why isn't Jonathan Stroud as famous as J K Rowling? Where are the films?
MUCH MUCH better than Harry Potter in every way. I can't enthuse about this series of books enough! Don't be put off by the age of the protagonists, I'm nearly 50 and I enjoyed it a much as my 11 and 13 year olds.
I am now a total fan of Jonathan Stroud. Many more books. Please!!!
Really good story, fantastic narration. Kept me engrossed for a few days. Thoroughly recommended.
Can't wait for the next book.
OK, maybe I wasn't concentrating properly, but I kept losing my place in this book. I found the plot really confusing.
I was constantly rewinding to check I hadn't missed something. Maybe this was because the story jumps back and forward in time.
But I liked the main character, Nate and would be interested in what happens to him in future.
I didn't like the narrator. Some of his voices sounded like Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins, which considering he is English takes some doing! He also had an odd habit of stressing the wrong words, which added to my overall confusion.
I had begun reading the kindle book, which was OK, but listening to this was a chore rather than an enjoyable experience
I'm not a dog person, but I fell in love with beautiful, loyal, Maggie. I liked Scott too and the story was good.
My 13-year old enjoyed the story too.
Please can we have more of Maggie and Scott.
I have over 500 books in my audible library. This has to rate amongst the worst. The title is a total misrepresentation. It was nothing about the life and times of the butler as described.
It had no coherence and I had no idea what the relevance of most of it was to the title.
A REALLY BAD listen. The only redeeming feature was the narration, (not Forest Whitaker who speaks so slowly I had to put it on 1 1/4 speed).
An appalling waste of two hours of my life. I will never buy anything from this 'author' again. I am asking for my money back.
I loved this book! Perfectly narrated (more from mr Abdallah, please) and a great story. Couldn't fault it in any way. This is what Audible should be about.
Am eagerly awaiting the rest in the series. Glad I have discovered such a good author and narrator. A fantastic pairing.
Great story, generally good narration. I really enjoyed this, zombies meet '24'. BUT, Mr Porter, please get a voice coach for the English accent!!! It was absolutely terrible. Wrong vowel sounds, wrong stress and emphasis. That 'London' accent comes from the moon, or mars or somewhere, but not London!!!
It kept pulling me out of the story and I almost didn't get the second book because of this. However, the other characters were great, the story ripped along and apart from Major Grace, the narration was very good.
