"Pretty good book"
This book is an okay listen. The main character annoyed me with her superior attitude. She was always the best, the prettiest, the wittiest, the toughest....the best at everything. You also wonder which parts of this story are "historic" and which ones are "fiction." I think that what they say about an Indian leader going to Washington to offer this deal is true, but some were even questioning if that part even happened. It is interesting to listen to and if one narrator read this which I think she did, then she did a great job with voices/accents. You want to keep reading to see what happens to these women once they marry the Indian tribe members. It is a good book. Nothing to write home about. Not super eloquent, but entertaining.
"It was slow, but it paid off."
This book was not what I expected....it was slow to develop and nothing creepy or ghostly was mentioned, besides the young maid being scared of the house at the start, until almost half way into the book. In the end, that is what Iiked about it. It let things develop. You felt you knew the characters. You also started to realize that the characters were slowly, ever so slowly changing.... I loved all the descriptions of the old house and village life in England. Then, when the creepier parts started up, they were CREEPY. I found myself on edge as I read..... Something I don't do when reading horror books like Stephen King
( whose books I love, but his are so unrealistic....) This one was more subtle. I usually listen only in the car on my commute, but I brought in my IPOD from the car and just had to listen to the last half hour in the house to see what happened. Now that I finished it, I am the one who feels haunted...by the characters and the life they lived in that house. I cannot stop thinking of them/it.
"One of the best!"
I am always looking for what I call a "life changing" book...one I will think about years after it ends, still think of the characters. This book was it. I rushed to listen to it all because you can't wait to see what happens, but now I miss getting to "check in" on the characters, especially Minny and Skeeter, to see what they are up to. The readers were EXCELLENT, especially the woman who reads Aibileen and MaeMobley. I had tears running down my cheeks and a smile on my face as I listened to the ending. Great, great book! Try it!
"Stephen can write. :0)"
I listen to audiobooks on my commute. I am often slow to get one started...I might listen on my way home in the afternoon, but not in the morning. I RARELY listen in my house from my IPOD or at the computer. But I did with this one. Stephen King cannot really think up anything TOO awfully original at this point, but he is a consummate storyteller. He weaves the cloth of a story so that you are in the action, feeling like you not only know the character, but you ARE the character at some points. The first two short stories are the best. The ending to the third one (Extensions) seemed premature and disappointed me, but I do think about possible endings for the main character alot, so maybe that was what King was trying for there. Either that or he could not think of how to end it. Last story was an interesting story, but the way the main character deals with her new knowledge doesn't seem plausible. But people do strange things...that I know. Obviously, you can tell from this review, that they were entertaining (albeit graphically gross and violent, as per usual with King) and thought-provoking. Very suspenseful at times. I listened to this one much faster than about any audiobook I've ever bought.... Worth your while if you like King.
"Short, poignant, and different than the movie"
I loved this book! I usually have a very hard time getting a new audiobook started. I am not that "into it" and will listen only a few days a week on my way home from work. But not in the mornings or after a hard day. This did not apply with this book! I was hooked from the start. It is eerie and compelling. I finished it in a few days.I even laid in bed listening to it! The movie was very loosely based on this book, so don't let that stop you. I found it cool it was written in the 1950s about the "future" in the 1970s. Wow! You will love it.
"Funny funny book!"
I love this book. It is narrated by the author. I had read the book a while back. Then, it is so good, I wanted to listen to it. It is one of those you can read over and over periodically. The author narrates it and at first, his dry, monotone sort of discouraged me from buying it. But I tried it and now I love it. It is great that he read it as these are his experiences so he gets the right inflection and intonation to make it sound the way he wanted it to sound. This is a collection of the funniest short stories I have ever heard. We had just moved and had no TV at our new house yet. I plugged in my IPOD and speakers and started playing one of the funniest chapters. He said he did not want to hear it but ended up listening and laughing through several chapters. The one about different versions of Santa Claus around the world will have you laughing so hard you can't stop. Very cute book. I love his other works as well...especially Holidays on Ice which was the first Andy Sedaris I had ever read. This family of his must have been so strange but hilarious! His sister is Amy Sedaris of Strangers With Candy (TV show). If you have a slightly quirky sense of humor, get this book!
"Not the best kid's book I have ever heard"
This book is good if you want to use it in the classroom to support study of Greek Mythology. I heard that students at my school LOVED it. I got it and was intrigued at first, then got bored during some parts. It took longer to listen to this book than others I have gotten of same length because it is not the most compelling one I have ever bought. I just finished it today. Was just glad to have it completed so I could buy something else. It has the same "formula" as Harry Potter but not as well written so not as good for adults. Kids like it because the author panders to the them with silly stuff. He even has some surfers talk about "must have had some bad mushrooms." I think that is not very appropriate in a kid's book. I think the author wants to use that sort of thing to get kids to buy his book. I did finish it, but that is mostly a testament to my OCD personality rather than the quality of the book.
"The best!"
I usually start out a new audiobook slowly....listening every other day on my commute home. This one, I was hooked from the first few sentences. I think it is better than Kiterunner, which was so beautiful, that even though I borrowed it, I went out to buy it to reread again someday. Which I never do. I think it is better than Kiterunner since I could relate to the women characters. This author has done it again. You won't be sorry for getting this one!
"Changes your life"
I haven't reviewed a book I've downloaded on audible.com yet, but I wanted to make a point to do so on this one! This is now one of my all-time favorites! I was walking a crowded park path as I listened to the last chapter. Tears were streaming down my face. I knew I should not boo hoo like that in public, but no choice! If you are like MOST of us and don't have "normal" parents, you will get a great deal from this book. For me, it caused me to call up my father that I speak to only about 4 times year and ask him if I could take him to lunch. If you DO have "normal" parents, you will appreciate that fact so much you will want to call your parents up and say "Thank you." This book is riveting: informative, sad, even comical at times. You are in awe of the author's (and her siblings') will to fight her way into a better life. Just amazing! Truly inspirational!
