Book is of course a great story, reader is good as far as I can ascertain, the music is simply too loud to be able to hear The Story. I'm finding this to be a frequent problem with the Audible Books.
We live in such a wonderful time for listening to books. And, there are so very many good ways to listen to the Bible and/or stories about the Bible, biblical characters, studies about Jesus and God. I enjoy these books, but even if they are not your "cup of tea" this book should please. For those not familiar with the Bible, it has sex, violence, blood, guts, intrigue, betrayal, love triangles, murder and much, much more.
I don't have television, so I cannot compare this to the mini-series that is currently running. I had read several things about the upcoming mini-series produced by Roma Downey (Touched by An Angel) and her husband Mark Burnett (reality series producer), with such talent and love of God it had to be a winner. So when I heard there would be a book, I signed up and waited. I will say I love Ms Downey's voice, so I was at first disappointed that she wasn't doing the narration, but, I believe they made the right choice.
You'll note in the description it lists three persons for narration, and indeed Ms Downey and Mr Burnett do narrate, but only at the beginning, when they explain about the book/series, the book itself is narrated by Keith David. He is good and does the book justice.
For anyone who has not read about the mini-series, it touches on stories from Genesis to Revelation, but only a few in depth. According to the producers, the reason for this was simply time and money. It would not be realistic to try to do the whole bible in a spectacular way, so they concentrated on doing just some of the stories in depth. From the book I can say that some of the stories will be familiar to most people, even those who've never read the Bible or stepped foot in a synagogue/church/etc. Some stories are not as well known, but all are done in a way that I believe even school aged boys would find exciting.
No doubt the mini-series with it's special effects will amaze the watchers just as Cecil B. DeMille's the Ten Commandments did in it's time.
In summary, I have truly enjoyed the book and feel it has something to offer for all.
If it had been funny. There were very few things that even got half a smile. In all fairness though, I didn't finish it - I couldn't, it was just bad.
It wasn't funny. Not even mildly amusing.
It was fine.
My Aunt liked it - but then she was on some strong pain medicine.
Save you credits or money and get something else.
Okay, I know that 100% of those who read this will not love it, but most will. For those of you who don't already feel this way about Jesus, let me say the book is respectful, it's not a tongue in cheek joke book.
Thanks to BibleGateway, I've listened my way through the Bible, several times, several Bibles, different narrators. As many times as I've read the Bible, it was dry, tough to get through, read it because I was supposed to. But when I started listening to it, I started understanding it differently and I saw Jesus as not just the Son of God, but as a human. I could hear his sarcasm at the Apostles - really. How could he not get a bit frustrated as often as he had to tell them things?
The author, John Eldredge takes this even further and shows not only Jesus in the Bible but in everyday life. Jesus is all things to all people and perhaps this isn't your Jesus, but be assured this can be your Jesus.
Don't cheat yourself and Jesus by leaving him in the Bible as a two dimensional Savior. Jesus wants to give, so ask, he loves you, let him, you can have this kind of relationship with Jesus, just open your mind and your heart - he's there waiting. Don't be surprised if hear "What took you so long?"
If you already have this kind of relationship with Jesus, you will enjoy this book and perhaps, even gain more insights. If you've never had this type of relationship, but would like it, you will fall in love with this book and fall in love with Our Savior all over again. And if you are in the middle, not sure about all this - get the book, surely you can spare a few of the hours God has given you to read about His Son and enhance your life.
I enjoyed this so much, I listened to it three times in a row. Now, I'm going to try another book by this author, John Eldredge,Walking with God: Talk to Him. Hear from Him. Really. I am excited!
Wow, I don't have much company with this rating, if I were giving stars for the authors intention, then I'd give 5 stars. I think the message is very important, but so is hope and so are solutions.
Reading the book I felt like I was told I'm failing, you're failing, everyone is failing at this and too bad. I kept waiting for the good news, how easy (or hard) it is going to be to change, but somewhere somehow I missed that part, if it was there.
For readers interested, may I suggest Craig Groeschel's "The Christain Atheist". Essentially the same message, but with the solution and even more importantly HOPE. He doesn't just tell you why your are failing, but what to do about it, how to turn your life around and be a real Christian.
I realize my rating is a bit odd, so please read why.
I was quite familiar with this particular version of the Bible and the narrator, I had purchased a Kindle just to have this Bible in an easy to lift format. However, I believe the purchaser should be warned that the books of the Bible are installed as separate books not as chapters within a book. Some of the short books are lumped together, but instead of installing one book, you end up with almost 60 different books making looking for anything else on the Kindle quite cumbersome. The other item is that is takes up almost all the Kindle, leaving room for just a few other books.
The advantage of installing the books as separate books rather than chapters is of course you can remove parts of the Bible to make room for other books as necessary, but who wants bits and pieces of the Bible? I'm quite certain if I did that the one passage I need would be in a book I'd archived.
While I see advantages to the way this was done, I feel the purchaser should be warned in advance. That said, I truly like this version, prefering it over others and feel the narrator, Max McLean is the best. Not only do I enjoy his voice, he has in some places changed the way I understand the Bible and the people. I've listened to several versions of the Bible and have heard others narrate this version, this is the first one I went to when I purchased my Kindle and while I have others, this will be my main "go to" Bible both audible and hardcopy.
A really good mystery that might easily cross over into comedy. I've always wondered what it is about the Brits that has us American's so captivated, perhaps it is the lifestyle which we know nothing about. Imagine Georgie, practically an orphan with no money of her own living with her half brother and his wife at a time with the only thing most Royals had was their title and perhaps the family property which they couldn't afford to heat.
After her 21st birthday "coming out" her allowance is stopped. The only thing Lady Georgiana has been taught to do is be a Lady. When she overhears the plans to marry her off to a fish faced Royal, without any plans other than to run, she announces a trip to London to help a fictitious friend. While she has all the right answers to make her escape, she didn't plan on what it would be like without a servant. She learns how truly invisible servants are having never noticed how a fire is lit, let alone laying the fire. Her friends think she is so clever because she has learned to dress herself.
However, along with all the fun of watching a grown up, grow up is a true mystery of the man who drowned in her bathtub. We are treated to a host of characters including Georgie's Cockney grandfather and HRH (Her Royal Highness).
While I am quite certain this book is a good read, I have to believe one would miss a lot of the fun without the proper accents. Katherine Kellgren does a wonderful job with them all, making it quite fun.
I'm ready for the next in the series.
