I wanted so badly to like this book. It came highly recommended by my sister and nephews. I will always be a sucker for anything connected to Tolkien. Every problem/conflict was wrapped up far too quickly. We went from meeting the characters to the battle of the end of the world in a few chapters. The characters seemed shallow. That could come from the narrator's voice inflections since I haven't read the text myself.
The author drew on many fantasy stories written by Tolkien, Lewis, and others. If the book was going to draw from so many other fantasy stories, it needed to be more "tongue-in-cheek." I found myself wondering many times throughout the book, "When is this going to end?" I never could suspend disbelief enough to believe that stealing a person's shadow was so horrible.
I like many fantasy books, and I like many children's books as an adult reader. This just wasn't one of them.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the characters. I find myself wondering what Hadrian and Royce are up to now. The narration was terrific. My one complaint is that on occasion I really wished the description would wrap up and get back to the action.
Overall I enjoyed this book.
Pluses: I enjoy anything that has a dog as one of the characters. The mystery was well done. I was sure I had it all figured out and suddenly I didn't.
Minuses: The main character spends too much time reliving his past. I was ready for him to get on with it already and to quit telling me about his wife in particular.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had the right mix of police procedural, mystery, and fantasy. It was fun. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith was perfect and made the book come alive for me. I know some reviewers had problems with his American accents, but he was so entertaining that I just really didn't care. I quickly snapped up the next two books in the series and polished them off within the week as well. I am sad that I now have to wait on the next one. However, I think I'll go see what else Holdbrook-Smith has at Audible. I think I'd like anything that he read.
Brandon Sanderson has done it again. This was a great book that pulled me in from the very beginning. The world building and magic system were both unique. It's intended audience is young adult but I enjoyed it as well.
I read The Lost Gate and really liked it. So, I was waiting anxiously for this book. Things take forever to develop. The author spends a lot of time dealing with teenage angst. I think what it boils down to is a whole lot of talk and not a lot of action.
What a fun little book! It was filled with everything you want an adventure to have. I'm going to recommend this to my 5th grade students. I think they will enjoy reading about the reluctant hero.
I had so much fun listening to this book. The story was great. The narrator was spot on. He was exactly what I'd expect a Hollywood agent to sound like. The wise cracking alien was an additional bright spot.
I am going to give this series one more shot. However I need some closure with some of the plot lines. Anderson keeps adding and adding without giving closure or even a measure of satisfaction to the reader.
I enjoy the characters and the world that the author has created. I'd like to feel that we're getting somewhere.
I originally picked this book up because I???ve always been crazy about dogs. I learned a lot more about service dogs as well as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and brain injuries. I was fascinated by Luis and Tuesday???s story. The things dogs can learn to do still amaze me. I was appalled at finding out the amount and kind of discrimination that disabled people and their service animals face. This is something our country needs to change. I'm not sure yet what I'll do with all of that information. For now, I'll keep my eyes open for opportunities to make a difference.
I bought this book based on recommendations, but it just wasn't my type. I love science fiction and fantasy, but this didn't do it for me. Too much anti Christian. It made me uncomfortable. I'm glad I only spent $4.95.
