I am a HUGE fan of Preston & Child and their Pendergast series. I finished this one only because I am such a big fan and Rene Auberjonois is such a master narrator. I will certainly buy the next book in the series - but if it is as far off the mark as this one is, it will be my last. The reviews on this book, which I read the other day, long after I'd purchased mine since I had it on auto-purchase, were clearly wildly mixed. Some love it and others are feeling like I do - pretty disappointed. I won't go into all the craziness that was in this book, but suffice it to say that it didn't live up to everyone's expectations for what we want from our favorite FBI agent (and those who write about him).
Wow... This wasn't what I expected, although I'm not sure what I expected. It was excellent, compelling, informative, and surprising. Definitely worth a credit or a purchase. This author and this narrator work well together, too.
I made it through nearly half of this book because I kept hoping it would improve but it didn't. Just ridiculous, impossible to follow, etc., etc. I had hopeful but it was not worth a credit and moreso, not worth my time.
As good as the first in the series and will definitely buy the next one. Outstanding story and narration. Keep with these characters.
Just an incredible book from start to finish and I'm actually glad I didn't realize/remember that this was written under a pen name. After listening - I will be looking for all the books in this series and am downloading the next one as soon as I finish this review. Characters were interesting and layered and the narrator - WOW! Perfect. Just perfect. THANK YOU for continuing to write. It shows that writing when you have this kind of talent has nothing to do with how much money you have - it has to do with the fact that you have stories to tell and you can't wait to do the work (hard work) to be able to tell them!
WOW! I'm online now to nab the next book in this series. I'm getting to know the characters and appreciate the people, the politics, and the story. Excellent!
I've listened to all of them and each one has been excellent. I believe this one could be the best of all - so far. I intend to buy Book 7 right now!
The book was potentially a good one although not the best of the series. Titus Welliver - holy crap. Maybe he's a good actor (I have no idea), but his narration was horrible. Where, oh where, was Dick Hill? Or really, anyone else? I listened to the entire book on double time.
Oh, my goodness. This was a fascinating book, even though it wasn't what I expected. To have such a personality-driven and layered book makes this one stand out. Christopher Lane did an excellent job with the narration. Because it was slow, which was appropriate, in its delivery, I ended up moving it to double-time on my iPhone. I would recommend this because of how you'll be surprised.
For some reason, this one has sat in my library and I even started it once and never finished it. Until this week. WOW! Outstanding. Interesting, compelling, intriguing, and informative. I've already bought another of Deon Meyer's works on Audible and have it queued up for tomorrow.
I always like to listen to the first in a series when I realize a book is part of a series and I'm glad I started here. I will continue right on to the next one this weekend!
