  • Cro-Magnon: How the Ice Age Gave Birth to the First Modern Humans

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By Brian Fagan
    • Narrated By James Langton

Best-selling author Brian Fagan brings early humans out of the deep freeze with his trademark mix of erudition, cutting-edge science, and vivid storytelling. Cro-Magnon reveals human society in its infancy, facing enormous environmental challenges - including a rival species of humans, the Neanderthals. For ten millennia, Cro-Magnons lived side by side with Neanderthals, an encounter that Fagan fills with drama.

    Paul says: "Fact and fiction"
"too much speculation presented as fact"

A lot of this book is fascinating, but he speculates an awful lot, drawing parallels to modern cultures like the Inuit and Eskimos, and doesn't clearly differentiate between what is speculation and what is fact. This casts doubt on what is presented as fact, to where I don't know how much to believe. While entertaining, this book should be read with caution. If I could get my money back for it, I would.

  • Particle Physics: A Very Short Introduction

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Frank Close
    • Narrated By Dennis Holland
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In Particle Physics: A Very Short Introduction , best-selling author Frank Close provides a compelling and lively introduction to the fundamental particles that make up the universe. The book begins with a guide to what matter is made up of and how it evolved, and goes on to describe the fascinating and cutting-edge techniques used to study it.

    Sergio says: "The best"
    "definitely a very *short* introduction"

I'm not sure whether it's the book itself or the narration style, but I'm having trouble following the content. The narrator breaks his sentences oddly, rather like a teacher pausing so the students can catch up with their note taking. I got this one on one of the $4.95 sales, and it's worth that much, but I'm glad I didn't spend a whole credit on it. Still, the topic is fascinating, the author doesn't take any fore-knowledge for granted, and the explanations are clear and sometimes a bit too concise.

  • Galactic Patrol: Lensman Series

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By E. E. 'Doc' Smith
    • Narrated By Reed McColm

The Galactic Patrol's Lensmen are the most feared peacekeepers in the galaxy. The "Lens", a telepathic jewel matched to the ego of its wearer, is the ultimate weapon in the war against the merciless pirate Boskone and his forces of lawlessness. The only problem is the Galactic Patrol isn't sure how to capitalize on the Lens' incredible powers. But new graduate Kimball Kinnison is determined to learn.

Dennis says: "Lensmen Series Is Still Fun"
    "Breathless sense of wonder"

While I'll agree that Reed McColm isn't the best narrator - he does doe terrible accents - I mostly enjoyed his not-quite-over-the-top narration that fits so well with the writing style of this classic space opera. I'm on my second listen-through of the series, and (again, other than the accents) am enjoying it greatly.

  • The Diamond Throne: The Elenium, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By David Eddings
    • Narrated By Greg Abby

Sparhawk, the Pandion Knight and Queen's Champion, returns from a long spell of exile to find his native land overrun with evil and intrigue, and his young Queen grievously ill. Indeed, Ehlana lies magically entombed within a block of crystal, doomed to die unless a cure can be found within a year.

Bryan J. Peterson says: "Quirky pronunciations but overall a worthy job."
    "mispronounciations make the book unlistenable"

I've enjoyed Eddings' Belgariad and Malorean, so I thought I'd like this trilogy. So far, it's typical Eddings, with a bit more convoluted politics, and a fairly slow leadup to the main quest part of the story. The narrator, however, ruins whatever enjoyment I'd have, however. He's limited, and recognizes his limitations, doesn't try to voices, for example. But his mispronunciations are making the book unlistenable. One word, in particular, is "hierarchy" - it's used a lot in the book, and the narrator consistently massacres it, which jerks me out of the story every time he hits the word. I'm not sure I'm going to continue on with the trilogy because of this.

  • Wizard

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Jayne Ann Krentz
    • Narrated By Ashley Adlon

Intellectual Sophia Bennett knew what kind of man she wanted: a rugged cowboy. And in Texas they were everywhere! So why couldn't she take her eyes off brilliant professor Max Travers? He was a Wizard in mathematics who surely made love by the numbers. Yet every inch of him - no Stetson, no dusty boots - added up to dangerously sexy.

Judy says: "Could she be more annoying?"
    "a good one to skip"

I got this one on a $4.95 sale, and feel it was too expensive. I'm a JAK fan, but this is clearly one of her earliest books. The heroine is annoying, and the hero doesn't make any headway with her until he out-alphas the (rather weak) other alpha competitor. I finished it, hoping it would get better, but it didn't.
