A terrifying encounter with an escaped convict in a graveyard on the wild Kent marshes; a summons to meet the bitter, decaying Miss Havisham and her beautiful, cold-hearted ward Estella; the sudden generosity of a mysterious benefactor - these form a series of events that change the orphaned Pip's life forever, and he eagerly abandons his humble origins to begin a new life as a gentleman. Dickens' novel depicts Pip's development through adversity as he discovers the true nature of his 'great expectations'.

Never underestimate the power of Dickens to enthrall. This is such a classic, and it was read so well. This listen got me through a month of washing dishes in the preschool where I work.

Set in the Parisian underworld and plotted like a detective story, Les Miserables follows Jean Valjean, originally an honest peasant, who has been imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving family. A hardened criminal upon his release, he eventually reforms, becoming a successful industrialist and town mayor. Despite this, he is haunted by an impulsive former crime and is pursued relentlessly by the police inspector Javert.

    "Most Excellent"
    Overall

This was such a pleasure to listen to. Although it is long, it is completely worth it. The story is so compelling, and the narration is perfect. I know Davidson can be a divisive reader, but I am a stalwart fan, and encourage those of you who have not experienced his reading to give him a shot. This was worth every minute.
