One hundred years before Ender's Game, the aliens arrived on Earth with fire and death. Earth Afire by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston is the story of the First Formic War. Victor Delgado beat the alien ship to Earth, but just barely. Not soon enough to convince skeptical governments that there was a threat. They didn’t believe that until space stations and ships and colonies went up in sudden flame. And when that happened, only Mazer Rackham and the Mobile Operations Police could move fast enough to meet the threat.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you loved Ender's game.......you have to read this series.....you must surrender your free will and push the buy button. Thank me later. I feel The two prequel books so far (where's the third one....hurry up!), a required reading with Enders Game, not because you have to read them to understand Enders Game, because Ender's Game was so good, you hunger for these books to give you more of the story.

Card gave us more of the story, I drank in every word. I was not disappointed, it was everything I hoped for. Nicely done, Card!

Who was your favorite character and why?

How can you not like Victor. But I am having a love hate relationship with Lem Jukes. Have not found the answer yet, but I suspect he will remain the villian you love to hate, and somehow respect.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Many......Right up there.....Stefan is always good!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I'm not that clever......but, how about......"Honey, where did I put the ant powder?"

The mining ship El Cavador is far out from Earth, in the deeps of the Kuiper Belt, beyond Pluto. Other mining ships, and the families that live on them, are few and far between this far out. So when El Cavador’s telescopes pick up a fast-moving object coming in-system, it’s hard to know what to make of it. It’s massive and moving at a significant fraction of the speed of light.

El Cavador has other problems. Their systems are old and failing. The family is getting too big for the ship. There are claim-jumping corporate ships bringing Asteroid Belt tactics to the Kuiper Belt.

If you could sum up Earth Unaware in three words, what would they be?

    I liked it!

What did you like best about this story?

Enders Game is one of the best all time sci-fi stories ever written, according to me. Card does a good job of filling in the blanks and fleshing out the foundation upon which Enders Game can now sit on.

I enjoyed the story-scape Card painted for us in this book, setting the stage for Ender's Game. I could feel and see the story happening as I listened. I knew the characters and cared about them and interacted with them.

If you liked Enders Game, these prequels are essential, and in my opinion better than the sequels were.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Stefan Rudnicki is one of my favorite narrators. Card uses him a lot and he is part of the story......I expect the Stefan Rudnicki voice when I hear a Card book......it wouldn't be right without him!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nearly did.....listened to this book and the second in the series over a three or four day period.

One choice can transform you - or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves - and herself - while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Would you listen to Insurgent again? Why?

No, but not because I didn't like it. There are so many books waiting for me, it is hard to re-listen to any book again. A special privilege only one or two books or series will ever have from me......those are my favorites.

That said, I liked this book. It was a good sequel to Divergent. I reallty like the story line, the world Veronica Roth created and the characters are easy to picture in my mind. A mark of a good writer in my book. I would have given the story five stars, but I felt Beatrice was too much of a maverick, lying to friends too much, running off half cocked too often. Even so, I really liked the book, I was just being too picky for a minute.....I'm back now... No question, I will buy the third book, as soon as I can get my hands on it.

What other book might you compare Insurgent to and why?

As I said answering this question about Divergent, it has a Hunger Games favor. But it is not a knockoff or copy. It is a good story line and if you liked Hunger Games, you probably would like this series too.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Not going to spoil it for you....read the book....worth the read.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    No

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! Captivating story line. The Author does a good job of painting a picture of the story location and creating characters that you can see in your mind and truly feel their personality. Veronica Roth did a good job developing this story. I am interested to see what other books she writes in the future. As for this book, I devoured it and the sequel in just three or four days.....now waiting for the third book....hurry Veronica!

What other book might you compare Divergent to and why?

Some compare this story to Hunger Games. There is a feel of hunger games in it, a lot action and personal interaction. But, it is different, not a knockoff or copy, it is a good story and was well worth the time listening to it.

What about Emma Galvin’s performance did you like?

My first time listening to her. Good job, I was drawn into the story and the voice of the book. Nothing is worse than a good book and a poor reader, distracting from the story. Emma didn't distract, that is my highest praise.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No extreme reaction, just captivation.

Cynical, quick-on-the-trigger Takeshi Kovacs, the ex-U.N. envoy turned private eye, has changed careers, and bodies, once more, trading sleuthing for soldiering as a warrior-for-hire and helping a far-flung planet's government put down a bloody revolution.

crazybatcow says: "Very very good story, very very "adult""
    "Exciting military sci-fi story, but....."
    Overall

I really enjoyed the story line and the characters, but the story was an "F-bomb" fest. It is one thing to skip over the "F-bombs" reading a story, but to hear them in the quantity they appeared in this story was too much, it ruined the story for me. I probably won't buy any other stories by this author. The story also has a graphic sex scene. Too much for me, I like PG-13 stories.

Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s easy to say that when it comes to sci-fi you either love it or you hate it. But with Ender’s Game, it seems to be you either love it or you love it.... The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Enter Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the result of decades of genetic experimentation.

Kapila says: "6 titles in the series so far"
"One of my favorite sci-fi stories"
    Overall

Great story, a must read for any sci-fi fan.
