I bought this in whispersinc and was willing to blame the deadpan narration until I tried to just read it for myself. A stupid story that could have been great. I was very disappointed in this book.

I don't normally like these romantic with a bit of horror stories but the first title in this series wasn't bad. The second, though.....a bit of a dissapointment. I'm not certain that I want to try #3. This series might continue to go downhill.

Although, this is an ok story, it isn't a horror story. More like a mystery.

This is not my normal reading material but it was on my book club list so I took a chance. I absolutely despised the characters, finding them cruel with little or no moral compass. In trying to excuse their behavior in light of their situation, I despised them even more. Amazingly good read if you are willing to accept that these people are not likeable. Then again, a book that can hold your interest even when the characters are awful is probably a wonderful read.

Although the premise was good, the writing was adolescent and redundant. The reading is extremely unprofessional. Obviously this author is comfortable with herself. Maybe she should hire a new editor?

This is a good story with likeable characters. I'm hoping for a sequel.

What a GREAT story! Likeable characters and a wonderful fantasy. Almost made me not like Santa Clause anymore. Klampas is a sympathetic devil and the main characters are all very enjoyable. Made me cry, made me laugh. An absolute gem of a book!

This book was billed as a ghost story, not an historical novel. The characters were not likeable and I couldn't find a plot. It is so uninteresting that I didn't even finish it.

Although the story itself is interesting and entertaining, the extreme right wing viewpoint continually distracts the reader with it's insistance that if we don't try to improve our lives in the first place, none of this will happen. You are constantly being interupted with reminders that no good deed goes unpunished and that reason equals weakness. "Don't try to be decent people or you will end up in some desperate version of the United States that is run and overrun by immigrants and those horrible japanese!" I had always enjoyed Dan Simmons but was sadly disappointed with this story. I thought that I was buying a novel, not some political warning about how weak we are becoming. The alternate world view is always a wonderful read but I would think that the average person is smart enough to come to their own conclusions without this constant spoon feeding of far right rhetoric.
