  • Steve Jobs

    • UNABRIDGED (25 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Walter Isaacson
    • Narrated By Dylan Baker
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Based on more than 40 interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

    Jeanne says: "Interesting man"
"Absolutely the best written book about anyone"
What did you love best about Steve Jobs?

I couldn't put it down. Well balanced, no punches left out and the story of a unique person of our time. A must read, even if you don't care for Steve Jobs.

What other book might you compare Steve Jobs to and why?

    None so far.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Asshole genius makes critics respect what he did.

  • The Real Crash: America's Coming Bankruptcy - How to Save Yourself and Your Country

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Peter Schiff
    • Narrated By Oliver Wyman

In The Real Crash, New York Times best-selling author Peter D. Schiff argues that America is enjoying a government-inflated bubble, one that reality will explode... with disastrous consequences for the economy and for each of us. Schiff demonstrates how the infusion of billions of dollars of stimulus money has only dug a deeper hole: The United States government simply spends too much and does not collect enough money to pay its debts, and in the end, Americans from all walks of life will face a crushing consequence.

John says: "Important Book with Somewhat Misleading Title"
"Podium for Peter Schiff mixed with some ideas"
What disappointed you about The Real Crash?

Biased presentation of factual things really insulted my intelligence.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Not Peter Schiff material.

What didn’t you like about Oliver Wyman’s performance?

    It was acceptable

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointed that I did not get information that was promised in the promo.

    Any additional comments?

Very disappointed to waste my money on this.

  • A People's History of the United States: 1492 to Present

    • UNABRIDGED (34 hrs and 12 mins)
    • By Howard Zinn
    • Narrated By Jeff Zinn

A classic since its original landmark publication in 1980, Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States is the first scholarly work to tell America's story from the bottom up - from the point of view of, and in the words of, America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

Gavin St. Ours says: "Horrible Editing Ruins Experience"
    "Very Biased towards his cause"
What would have made A People's History of the United States better?

I didn't realize how biased a "History of the US" could be until I listened to this book. I will delete from my library. Very sad that people write such trash.

What could Howard Zinn have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Tell things in a balanced and unbiased manner.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Jeff Zinn?

He did a good job in the reading. No complaint.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Basically disappointed because I actually thought I had purchased a history book not a sermon that never tells both sides of a story. He only sticks to his warped believe that capitalism is bad and communism is great. Facts of the world refute this but it does not bother him.

    Any additional comments?

Tell people that buy this that it is an old communist man justifying his life's belief. America is a terrible place to live.

  • Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs)
    • By Laura Hillenbrand
    • Narrated By Edward Herrmann
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

    Janice says: "Indescribable"
    "Great story and well written"
What made the experience of listening to Unbroken the most enjoyable?

The descriptions of events was like a well painted picture. This is an old story which many people either never knew about or did not find it interesting. Laura has made it interesting.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Unbroken?

The treatment and description of the 45 days on a raft were made realistic.

Have you listened to any of Edward Herrmann’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I liked the reader and found the voice and pronunciation to my liking.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Descriptions of the prison camp made me have a deeper respect for men captured and able to survive Japanese treatment. It is sad that the Japanese choose not to recognize the cruelty of their miltary in the period before August 1945.

    Any additional comments?

All men in Japanese hands would have been killed if the Allies had tried to invade Japan. One more justification of Hiroshima as a life saver for Japanese and allied soldiers.

  • Hunting Eichmann: Chasing Down the World's Most Notorious Nazi

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 36 mins)
    • By Neal Bascomb
    • Narrated By Paul Hecht

Best-selling author Neal Bascomb has garnered critical acclaim for such riveting nonfiction as Higher and Red Mutiny. Based on extensive interviews and previously classified details, Hunting Eichmann is a compelling account of the relentless hunt for the nefarious Adolf Eichmann.

Scott says: "A Fascinating Story of Eichmann's Capture"
    "Eichman Hunt"

This seems to have been written for a movie rather than good reading. Too stretched out when
not necessary. Could have been a good story in half the time.

  • The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill, Volume II: Alone, 1932-1940

    • UNABRIDGED (36 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By William Manchester
    • Narrated By Richard Brown

This second volume in William Manchester's three-volume biography of Winston Churchill challenges the assumption that Churchill's finest hour was as a wartime leader. During the years 1932-1940, he was tested as few men are. Pursued by creditors (at one point he had to put up his home for sale), he remained solvent only by writing an extraordinary number of books and magazine articles.

    Andrew says: "Worth it"
    "Great Voices"

The reader makes this an excellent book. His ability to sound like Churchill, change his voice for ladies, sing a song, etc. are entertaining. The story is interesting and well presented. Very even balanced on a very controversial person.

  • The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany

    • UNABRIDGED (57 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By William L. Shirer
    • Narrated By Grover Gardner

Since its publication in 1960, William L. Shirer’s monumental study of Hitler’s German empire has been widely acclaimed as the definitive record of the 20th century’s blackest hours. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich offers an unparalleled and thrillingly told examination of how Adolf Hitler nearly succeeded in conquering the world. With millions of copies in print around the globe, it has attained the status of a vital and enduring classic.

    G. House Sr. says: "A Tale of Momumental Evil, Stupidity and Hatred"
    "Classic Book Well read"

This is a classic and I can see why. It has the details and well designed chapters that allow one to focus on the subjects. Sometimes moving ahead as required and then returning to the time frame to keep it in clear order.

  • The Outline of History, Volume 1

    • UNABRIDGED (22 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By H.G. Wells
    • Narrated By Bernard Mayes

Having coined the phrase "the war that will end war," H.G. Wells was disillusioned by the World War I peace settlement. Convinced that humanity needed to awaken to the instability of the world order and remember lessons from the past, the author of The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, and The War of the Worlds set about writing history. Wells hoped to remind mankind of its common past, provide it with a basis for international patriotism, and guide it to renounce war...

Charles says: "A War of the Worlds Indeed"
"The Outline of History, Volume 1"

Famous book and I can understand why. Well written and balanced based on what was known at the time this was written. Good listening if you like details.

  • FDR

    • UNABRIDGED (32 hrs and 52 mins)
    • By Jean Edward Smith
    • Narrated By Marc Cashman

One of today's premier biographers has written a modern, comprehensive, indeed ultimate book on the epic life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This is a portrait painted in broad strokes and fine details. We see how Roosevelt's restless energy, fierce intellect, personal magnetism, and ability to project effortless grace permitted him to master countless challenges throughout his life.

    Thomas says: "wow-"

Well balanced account of FDR as a person. Good listening material and gave me a new insight into a person I did not really like.

  • The Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant: Part 1: The Early Years, West Point, Mexico

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 58 mins)
    • By Ulysses S. Grant
    • Narrated By Peter Johnson

Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the United States and commander of the Union forces in the Civil War, tells the story of his life in his own words. In this opening volume, Grant covers his early years, including his time at the U.S. military academy at West Point and his service during the Mexican War under Zachary Taylor. Grant wrote his memoirs in order to rescue his family from debt and they were published as he lay dying of throat cancer. Today, they are an American classic.

Robert W. Gillespie says: "U.S Grant: A Man of Intelligence and Dignity"
"Personal Memoirs of USGrant Part 1"

Not professional in terms of writing style but excellent in getting a glimpse of the person writing... simple - straight forward - matter of fact. This must have been the style of a humble yet successful general.
