"As expected"
Certainly takes you "there". The book is slow and painful but perhaps that is part of the experience. The reading is good - an important element.
"Soneela takes her reading and characters seriously"
As the only person in my book club who listens to audio, I am privileged to have the extra dimension of "READER" which I cannot share with them in my review. I can and often do, share a little of the audio to highlight a portion of the book I particularly enjoy. This reader, with the multitide of characters and accents, is able to portray these people and their accents authentically to help me distinguish who is who.
This book's character convergence does not feel contrived. The subject matter is dealt with three-dimensionally. Only the children are painted as angels on the planet...
Thumbs up.
"Laugh and cry with Jeannette"
I think it helps that Jeannette is reading her own story. The pace of the story matches the pace of childhood - slow. 4 describes it perfectly.
"Thesis could be an essay albeit worth hearing"
An easy listen due to quality reading and interesting research. Concepts are somewhat belaboured. I would have preferred a faster pace. That said, the content is more than worthwhile. I have recommended the book to several friends.
"Reinforces the case against gluten/gliadin"
Although this book is repetitive, is another great case for a low carbohydrate diet and has a reader who mispronounces many food words - it IS a worthwhile listen in that it makes a case against modern wheat and BIG FOOD. Every time I discontinue gluten in MY DIET I feel better and lose many of the listed annoying symptoms despite the fact that I do not test positive for celiac. I am chemically sensitive, though. This book is better than most allergists and gastro-enterologists I have seen.
"Premise isn't perfect"
Although it would be easy to argue against the premise, there is merit in some of the arguments presented by the author. Sometimes it is worth listening to a book because it provokes thought even if in the end you don't entirely agree. This is one of those books. Easy to listen to,, and if somewhat repetitive, not boring, and certainly thought-provoking.
"Outstanding"
I devote little of my time to fiction. This one is worth every minute. Outstanding readers - outstanding writer. I loved every chapter - felt as though I was with them all!
"Great reader, good writer...but"
Better to read than to listen...maybe. Many characters, many lengthy descriptions that may not be key to the plot, the characters or the story line may be distracting to the audio version. i am currently reading the second book in print form to compare the experience. There is no doubt that the main character is compelling, the reader brilliant, the plot interesting, but it is not the 5/5 that I expected it to be. Cut it in half!
"Lots of interesting points"
This is the type of book to listen to in short spurts. The little points, of interest, can be picked up at any point and reviewed learned and shared.
"Moving autobiography"
In addition to being well-written, moving and poignant, this book was brilliantly read - a point often overlooked in audio review.
