There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

I downloaded this book thinking it would be a haunted house story. It's so much more. I hesitate to say more because I would not want to give away anything. I'll just say there is a mystery that you will not guess. Not in a million years. The story is part science fiction, part horror, part thriller. I definitely wanted to finish it in one sitting.

Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. Joyland is a brand-new novel and has never previously been published.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a good read/listen. It is an entertaining story superbly written with broad appeal. If you're just looking for hair-raising horror this is not the story for you. Poignant is not what usually comes to mind with Stephen King’s stories but I think that’s the best way to describe Joyland even though there is a murder mystery.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, if the friend was into action/adventure stories (Cussler, Rollins, Child, Preston etc.). There is nothing complicated here just a good adventure based on the myth (?) surrounding Area 51. And if you have not read any other Event Group thrillers you can still enjoy this story. Light but very entertaining listen.

He's Here. Amanda Young doesn’t know who…or how…or why. She only knows that evil has come to Port Isley, the picturesque seaside village she calls home. It arrives on the wings of summer, in the guise of a sinister, nameless man crowded among the tourists from Seattle. He’s there when Amanda has a premonition of a classmate’s murder and when the girl’s mutilated body is discovered hours later. He’s lurking nearby when the neighbors she’s known forever inexplicably begin to…change. There — when their suddenly raging emotions transform them into lustful, violent shadows of themselves. Only a select few see the dark signs: Amanda, the town psychiatrist, and the local newspaper publisher. Together, they set out to discover exactly what’s happening in Port Isley — and whether or not anyone has a prayer of getting out of the town alive.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Maybe. It was well written and definitely held my attention but the ending was unsatisfying and implausible. The narration was good and the characters felt real. The suspense and pervasive atmosphere of doom was riveting. The tension builds and builds and then... just falls off a cliff. And not a dramatic high cliff. Just poof. Done. Still, I enjoyed the chilling account of a small resort town going mad and will definitely look for other work from S. D. Perry.

How do you make sure a crime that hasn’t happened yet, never does? That’s the critical question facing Odd Thomas, the young man with a unique ability to commune with restless spirits and help them find justice and peace. But this time, it’s the living who desperately need Odd on their side. Three helpless innocents will be brutally executed unless Odd can intervene in time. Who the potential victims are and where they can be found remain a mystery. The only thing Odd knows for sure is who the killer will be: the homicidal stranger who tried to shoot him dead in a small-town parking lot.

The story is X-Files meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers with The Thing thrown in for good measure. Nothing good can come from Big Pharma and Big Agro in cahoots with desperate, ruthless aliens. And when the aliens exist among us undetected in strategic government and law enforcement positions... what can stop them? Season of Harvest has an interesting premise centering on the real life explosion of genetically modified food. There is action and some suspense but the story is somewhat weakened by the "romance" of the two main characters which seems forced. There are other parts that also did not feel genuine to me, like the missile silo/research stations. And I did not ‘feel’ the cat angle either. It was well worth my time and credit but it left me feeling it could have been better. Overall a 3.7.

First off, I have to say I was “duped” into thinking this was finally the unabridged version of the book. I have a strong aversion to abridged books and probably would not have purchased this had I known it was not the complete work. Having said that, it was still a good listen despite the missing parts. If you never read the print version you probably won’t notice because the story is told in the style of firsthand accounts that are choppy by nature. Think Ken Burns doing a documentary on a worldwide zombie war. All-in-all it is a moving story that is less about zombies than the human spirit, good and bad.

I’m pretty much f**ked. That’s my considered opinion. F**ked. Six days into what should be the greatest two months of my life, and it’s turned into a nightmare. I don’t even know who’ll read this. I guess someone will find it eventually. Maybe 100 years from now. For the record... I didn’t die on Sol 6. Certainly the rest of the crew thought I did, and I can’t blame them. Maybe there’ll be a day of national mourning for me, and my Wikipedia page will say "Mark Watney is the only human being to have died on Mars."

The story is packed full of science-- biology, botany, physics, chemistry, astronomy-- you name it and it is in there. But it is not at all dull or tedious. You do not have to understand it all completely (a lot flew right over my head) to enjoy the story. Mr. Weir manages to make even rocket science a seamless, painless part of a good story. At its heart is a very simple story about survival under the most hostile and unnatural conditions imaginable. There is an astronaut stranded on Mars without enough food, water and air to last until a rescue. And rescue is extremely doubtful since everyone on earth believes him dead. On the “bright side” there are plenty of "70's sitcoms and disco music to keep him company. His struggle to survive and remain sane and the herculean efforts to save him are excellent entertainment.

Everything is going great until a bizarre snake attack sends everybody in the zoo running for cover. It isn't long before Joe realizes that there is a lot more going on than a simple snake attack. And if the hungry lions, roaring gorillas and charging elephants now free from their cages have anything to say about it, there is more bloodshed to come. All of the world's animals are attacking, and no one knows why. What they do know is that man is now on the bottom of the food chain.

Step into another world rich with resources like for instance, gold? Stuff that you can sell in this world for lots of money? And then suppose you told your very best friends about it so they could help you haul it back to this world and share in the wealth? This is a great story with action and suspense but not what you’re thinking given the cover art. Now I did have a little trouble swallowing teens randomly knowing that much about legal issues and it’s a bit heavy with the avionics and mechanics but those issues are minor and hey if your into those things, bonus for you. The take away is the story is really good and will hold your attention. Good job with the narration as well.
