Leon and the Spitting Image is about a hotel full of animals. It's about an evil ice maker. It's about glass eyeballs and human catapults. It's about really old panty hose and Possibly Fake Hair.

The kids loved this one. Gets a little strange at the end for grownups but the kids have listened to it more than once.

  • Norman Tuttle on the Last Frontier: A Novel in Stories

As Norman contemplates a long and lonely adolescence on the Last Frontier, he's sure there's more to life than being the klutziest kid in Alaska. In 15 closely linked stories that follow Norman from age 13 to going-on 16, Tom Bodett combines rugged Alaskan adventure with a warm and funny story of a boy who may not be as lonely as he thinks.

This is one you can listen to with the older kids. We laughed out loud together! Wish he would write some more adventures with Norman.

Bud, Not Buddy, a Newbery Medal winner, is full of laugh-out-loud humor and wonderful characters, hitting the high notes of jazz and sounding the deeper tones of the Great Depression.

This was a great book to listen to with the kids, funny and touching. We have listened to this one more than once. Definately worth a credit!

This first novel from Nebula Award-winning short story writer Ellen Klages was picked as a Junior Library Guild selection and named a Book Sense Number-One Children's Pick. It follows a young girl named Dewey, whose father is part of a super-secret project in 1943 Los Alamos. Dewey, a gifted scientist herself, slowly realizes the implications of "the gadget" her father is working on. She and Suze, another Los Alamos child, find comfort in each other's friendship.

    Rita says: "Wonderful!"
    "a little boring"
    Overall

This book was a little slow, I don't think it would hold older kids interest for very long. It has some sad things happen though that might bother younger kids. There just wasn't much of a story for me. I wanted to like it but didn't.

After her plane crashes, a 17-year-old girl spends 11 days walking through the Peruvian jungle. Against all odds, with no food, shelter, or equipment, she gets out. A better equipped group of adult survivors of the same crash sits down and dies. What makes the difference?

Betty says: "I'm not sure it can get better than this"
    "Not what I expected"
    Overall

I found this book to be too much like listening to a lecture and not a story. The few survivor stories were disjointed and had very little detail to them. It seemed to drone on an on about how the brain works, I was expecting to learn some survival techniques and all I learned was think like a survivor. I listen to most of my books many times but had to force myself to finish this one.

Harriet and David, against the trends of the 1960s, favor fidelity, love, family life, and a permanent home. They marry and begin their lives together in an old Victorian house; children fill the home and life is idyllic. It is only when Harriet becomes pregnant for the fifth time that problems occur.

It felt like 1/2 a book to me, I realize there is a second book but I don't want to waste a credit on it. There were some strange "dead air" pauses that were annoying, I kept thinking the batteries went out in my player. If I had it to do over I would not have gotten this book.
