In her delightful and moving memoir, Sissy Spacek writes about her idyllic, barefoot childhood in a small East Texas town, with the clarity and wisdom that comes from never losing sight of her roots. Descended from industrious Czech immigrants and threadbare southern gentility, she grew up a tomboy, tagging along with two older brothers and absorbing grace and grit from her remarkable parents, who taught her that she could do anything.

What did you love best about My Extraordinary Ordinary Life?

It was simple to listen to and so refreshing to hear about a celebrity without all the drama and negative past.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Both of her parents but if I have to choose one, Sissy's mom. I love her positive outlook on life. I was very touched when Sissy speaks of her mom in chapter 13, when Mom was looking around the living room.

What about Sissy Spacek’s performance did you like?

Sweet voice, just the right amount of country without sounding like Reba McEntire.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A beautiful star, inside and out, who never lost sight of her roots.

    Any additional comments?

This was a very welcome and much needed listen (My last two books were Camina Salcido's devastating memoir and one other book that was so bad I couldn't get past the first few chapters). I felt cleansed after listening to Sissy's.

According to The Waiter, 80 percent of customers are nice people just looking for something to eat. The remaining 20 percent, however, are socially maladjusted psychopaths.

Waiter Rant offers the server's unique point of view, replete with tales of customer stupidity, arrogant misbehavior, and unseen bits of human grace transpiring in the most unlikely places.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - I already have. Anyone who has worked in the industry or eats out will enjoy this book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Waiter Rant?

When the writer's girlfriend was stiffed by two girls (who turn out to be servers themselves!) and how she reacts to it. We've all been there!

    Which scene was your favorite?

Many - but what stands out right now was the rich man with the cheap hooker.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No guffaws or tears on this one, it was just an easy enjoyable read. Very similar to Heads in Beds.

    Any additional comments?

I appreciate some of the things I learned from this book.
Also, I relived some of my own experiences both as a former server MANY years ago, and as a co-customer with some of the arrogant people he writes about. I've been embarrassed by some of my dining partners in my years. It's funny to hear a server's perspective.

Domenica Ruta grew up in a working-class, unforgiving Italian town north of Boston where in the seventeenth century women were hanged as witches. Her mother, Kathi, a notorious figure in this hardscrabble place, was a drug addict and sometime dealer whose life swung between welfare and riches, whose highbrow taste was at odds with her base appetites.

What did you love best about With or Without You?

I always like a success story. So many people have grown up in dysfunction, and it is inspirational to hear of people who survive and thrive whatever craziness they have been through.

What did you like best about this story?

Dominca's cadence and the way she delivers her story, with humor and believability.

What about Domenica Ruta’s performance did you like?

The story is told so matter of fact. She doesn't whine or "woe is me". She doesn't present herself as a victim, she just shares her story...and what a story!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, if I could have, I would have.

    Any additional comments?

I'm very impressed with this woman. The only thing that puzzles me is how she ever felt herself unattractive. I looked up her picture on line - she is gorgeous!

Jeanne Wakatsuki was seven years old in 1942 when her family was uprooted from their home and sent to live at Manzanar internment camp - with 10,000 other Japanese Americans. Along with searchlight towers and armed guards, Manzanar ludicrously featured cheerleaders, Boy Scouts, sock hops, baton-twirling lessons, and a dance band called the Jive Bombers who would play any popular song except the nation's number-one hit: "Don't Fence Me In".

Farewell to Manzanar is the true story of one spirited Japanese-American family's attempt to survive the indignities of forced detention.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

No - I think she did a good job of presenting an important part of history.

If you’ve listened to books by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston before, how does this one compare?

    NA

What does Jennifer Ikeda bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

As with any Audible book, I feel HEARING the story brings more feeling to it than reading it.

What else would you have wanted to know about Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston’s life?

I feel she did an excellent job of bringing her story full circle.

    Any additional comments?

This is a story that many may NOT want to hear about, but we should. I'm always amazed that this type of thing, as with segregation, occurred in MY lifetime. It saddens me to think that people can treat people who are "different" as they have been treated. God bless Jeanne and her family and other Japanese who went through this.

Her recollections of tender moments, funny moments, and troubled times. My favorite was hearing about the fiasco with the taxi when she was late in her pregnancy.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A celebrity's account of what could be any mother's story.

Where does If You Ask Me rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Upper middle. It was just a fun easy listening book.

Would you recommend If You Ask Me to your friends? Why or why not?

Sure. Who doesn't love Betty White? And who doesn't love hearing stories from our more seasoned citizens!

Have you listened to any of Betty White’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Her love for Allen Ludden is very touching, but I replayed the chapter about Coco over and over, getting emotional each time. I've repeated the story to many friends. Her love of animals is wonderful. I wish I were in her position so I could experience some of her animal encounters.

    Any additional comments?

Betty White is someone all of us can learn something from and enjoy spending time with...even if it's only through an audiobook.

What made the experience of listening to Dispatches from the Edge the most enjoyable?

First I'm a fan of Anderson. This book just made me more so. He leads a fascinating life and thru this book you see how humble he remains. He has seen and been thru so many things and I love how effortlessly and honestly he shares those experiences.

What other book might you compare Dispatches from the Edge to and why?

Closest would be Killing Kennedy by O'Reilly. I enjoy both of their factual, simple delivery.

Have you listened to any of Anderson Cooper’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. If he has more for me to read - please advise!

If you could give Dispatches from the Edge a new subtitle, what would it be?

Probably the same as my review Headline...Fascinating Man, Fascinating Life

    Any additional comments?

I couldn't stop listening when he talks of Katrina. The way he approaches situations and how he shares his facts is so compelling.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I think something may have been wrong with it. It listed only 3 chapters on my ipod but it went on to 4 then 5 then jumped up to the teens and went from 13 to 15 then 18 or something like that. I didn't mind missing that much because it was a hard listen anyway.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I loved Davy Jones (and was saddened when he passed away) but through this book I felt his storytelling fell short. He would have a big lead up to a situation or memory, then it just drops off and next thing you know there's a silence and a new chapter.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Davy Jones?

I think he was okay. I think my issue is more with the STORY than his narrating.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I liked the end when he talks about each Monkee.

    Any additional comments?

Just disappointing and I had such high hopes.

From a young age, Andy Cohen knew two things: He was gay, and he loved television. Now presiding over Bravo's reality-TV empire, he started out as an overly talkative pop-culture obsessive, devoted to Charlie's Angels and All My Children - and to his mother, who received daily letters from him while he was at summer camp, usually reminding her to tape the soaps. In retrospect, it's hard to believe that everyone didn't know that Andy was gay; still, he remained in the closet until college. Finally out, he embarked on making a career out of his passion for television.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Evelyn! She's a kick, I love how Andy talks about her. I got the feeling they have a genuine love between them and beautiful acceptance of each others quirks.

What about Andy Cohen’s performance did you like?

He is really speaking to the listener, not just reading words on a page. The whole thing, from start to finish was wonderfully amusing.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed regularly throughout the book. But the most surprising thing was how much I now love Andy Cohen. I don't know what made me buy this book because I've never been a fan of his. I only saw WWHN (or whatever his show is called) a few times, and quite frankly, what I knew of him I didn't like. So I don't know why I bought the book. HOWEVER, I am glad I did and I am now a huge fan of Andy's. I want to be one of his "besties".

    Any additional comments?

An absolute MUST READ or HEAR.Oh - and poor Jill Zarin....so desperately trying to get attention with the whole dog thing. That really surprised me considering she's got a wonderful family (love her husband). I loved getting all the behind the scenes stuff that only Andy could tell.
