  • Zombie Spaceship Wasteland: A Book by Patton Oswalt

    • Narrated By Patton Oswalt
    Overall

    (431)
    Story

Oswalt combines memoir with uproarious humor, from snow forts to Dungeons & Dragons to gifts from Grandma that had to be explained. He remembers his teen summers spent working in a movie Cineplex and his early years doing stand-up. Readers are also treated to several graphic elements, including a vampire tale for the rest of us and some greeting cards with a special touch.

Daniel says: "Funny and Inspirational Grab Bag"
    "Not great material for audio"
    Overall

Oswalt is actually a pretty good narrator but the material was not all that funny and the REM quotes totally disrupted the flow of the reading.

Low-level entertainment lawyer Nick Carter thinks it's a prank, not an alien encounter, when a redheaded mullah and a curvaceous nun show up at his office. But Frampton and Carly are highly advanced (if bumbling) extraterrestrials. And boy, do they have news. The entire cosmos, they tell him, has been hopelessly hooked on humanity's music ever since "Year Zero" (1977 to us), when American pop songs first reached alien ears. This addiction has driven a vast intergalactic society to commit the biggest copyright violation since the Big Bang.

Robert says: "Fantastic Performance by Hodgman"

The ratings must be from friends. I was so looking forward this book and decided to listen to it instead of reading it. HUGE mistake. I can't rate the story because I couldn't listen to it. It is completely flat. A wasted opportunity for the right narrator. I've listened to at least a 100 books and this was the worst. Such a waste of money. Whoever made the decision to use this narrator should find a new line of work.

Grace Chu is an American-educated Chinese national now working as a forensic accountant after serving in the Chinese army as an intelligence officer. John Knox is an American who parlayed his military service during the first Iraqi war into a lucrative import/export business, which now provides him the official access he needs to work freelance undercover operations throughout the world. Both are highly skilled operatives capable of deft subterfuge or extreme violence, if circumstances require.

I'm a Ridley Pearson fan but this is the first one I have listened to instead of reading.
Impossible for me to get passed the reader to see if I would enjoy the story.
I have listened to 100 plus books and I generally like the readers but this one was really a let down.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

I'm sorry I just don't think Will Wheaton is very good. He was ok in Ready Player One but this had a lot of characters and he just wasn't up to it.
The story wasn't great but a good reader could have brought some life to it.

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

His portrayal of the game creator is really bad - fortunately it s a very small part of the book. It's a little hard to tell whether it's Wheaton's fault or the producer of the audio book. There is even a description later in the book of the game creators personality and speech it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the author's character.

The Thief is a seasoned pickpocket. Anonymous in his tailored suit, he weaves in and out of Tokyo crowds, stealing wallets from strangers so smoothly that sometimes he doesn't even remember the snatch. Most people are just a blur to him; nameless faces from whom he chooses his victims. He has no family, no friends, no connections.... But he does have a past, which finally catches up with him when Ishikawa, his first partner, reappears in his life and offers him a job he can't refuse.

The $400,000 would take care of the mortgage payments that are starting to back up on Tom and Anna Reed. It would cover the credit-card debt they can't get out from under. It would help them find a way to have the child they desperately want but can't seem to conceive. It is more money than either of them has ever seen in one place. But they have no idea what it's doing in their house.

Man do I wish I had thought to check the reviews. I can't believe they switched narrator. It's really bad.
Every character sounds the same and they all sound like a grandmother. Wish I could get my money back

I listen to all the previous Spellmans and enjoyed them.
This is only the third book ever I just deleted without listening to.
