Mr. Hart definitely knows how to write a good story! Hooray for all us mystery lovers. Terrific plot, fully defined characters (some to like, some to love, and some to hate) and enough twists and turns to keep me guessing. When I find myself exclaiming "Oh, no!" or some such during the narration, I am really hooked. The main character, while flawed, was engaging and very likeable. I found myself smiling with him, dismayed when he stumbled and in the end, hated to say goodbye.
My narration standards are high. There are many books I would love to get, but I refuse to listen to what I consider a bad narrator more than once. David Chandler definitely goes on my "approved" list. I am from NC and appreciate David Chandler for not having a southern accent. The temptation for many narrators is to go over the top with the drawl, and it truly grates on my southern born and bred ears. The reading speed was excellent, and his voice is pleasant to hear. The narration never interfered with the story which, in my opinion, is the point. No regrets in using this credit!
My second Q, and promptly downloaded 3rd in series.
Would have been a 5 star but narration was difficult at first. First class detective story!
Ethiopia is physical setting but draws characters from all over. With such a diverse history, the participants in this wonderful novel come together and weave a spellbinding story of family, dedication, faith, and history. Not to be missed, this is one of my favorites!
I am just not into listening to hours and hours of designer names followed by very graphic descriptions of body mutilations. Like we need a book of fiction to remind us that there are sick psychos loose in the world; watch the news!
This is a great story for any unashamed patriotic lover of dogs and mysteries. I was not expecting very much depth in this book and was very pleasantly surprised. In many places the descriptions of the dog could have easily been of my own dog. Very accurate picture of a German Shepherd. Oh, yes, the people are very pleasant and the mystery interesting. Five Stars easily!
I had to restart dozens of times to get accustomed to speed of narration. Foreign names usually are not a problem for me but this is read so fast it ended up being gobbledygook. By the second part, my ear had adapted somewhat and was able to finally distinguish the different characters. Very difficult listening! But good enough story to soldier on in spite of narrator….
Enjoyed listening to this up to the very end which was a disappointment. Liked the characters, the setting and the narrator. So, I enjoyed 14 1/2 hours of this 15 hour audible book.
I read this 30 some years ago and loved it. Really enjoyed someone reading it to me. I've read many of Clarke's books and can remember the endings of most of them after all these years. Unfortunately, I can't say that about the majority of the books I've read since.
I am a great fan of Lawrence Block and especially like this series. I was disappointed with this book, but still, it was Lawrence Block and his worst is better than most.
Although slow in beginning, excellent story. Loved the characters and different take on WWII. Hard to put down.
First book by author and the narration was awful! The story may have been good, but the narration was so irritating I just couldn't get past it.
