This was a really good legal thriller, characters were developed really well, great plot. I haven't read many of the previous books but I think I will, it looks like this one is number 16 already!
I do not think this is Picoult's best book. I ALMOST stopped listening to it after the first couple of hours. What didn't I like? It spent way too much time at the beginning talking about what the mother was thinking about the terrible situation. But most of all, the main character, the mother, just wasn't very likeable to me. I really didn't like her, I didn't like how she reacted to things, she seemed selfish and at times her decisions didn't even make sense. Quite a few times I would think, "I can't believe you are acting like that." I also thought some of the situations were a bit too extreme and unbelievable. I did listen to the end just to find out what happened.
Yes, I'm a book lover, but for this one I'd say Watch the Movie. Yes, the book is well-written, has a poetic turn of phrase and lots of description, if you like that kind of thing - but I don't. I guess I just like books that move a little faster with the plot. This one had way too much description for me. I saw the movie, and that was pretty much all plot. Also the author talked pretty slow so I listened to it at double speed. Fast forwarded through a lot and finally stopped listening. The plot itself is interesting if you can get to it.
I mainly listened to this book because I was interested in how this family built their company, from a business aspect. The book really consists of the business stuff, the family stuff, hunting stuff, and recipes. The family stuff was good, but I have read lots of "advice about kids and marriage" family books so this was stuff I'd already heard and I fast forwarded through a lot of it. The hunting/fishing stuff I'm not really interested in so I fast forwarded through that. The recipes - well I don't cook and even if I did, not sure if I'd want to hear recipes read, so I fast forwarded through that. But the business stuff, which is the main reason I listened, was interesting! I'm not saying the book was bad, just for me it wasn't all information I was interested in. Seemed a little repetitive with the concepts at times too. Like "We all have different gifts and we all appreciate each others' differences." Seemed like that was said a lot.
I have listened to every Kinsey book since letter A. The narrator is great. However, the last one, V, I returned because it was confusing, had multiple plots, and I couldn't get through the first couple chapters. I decided to give it one more try with W and even preordered. I have to stop listening to this one and return it as well...why? Because of all the details! So many details it gets boring - I wish she'd stick to the plot. Here's an example - she goes to see Henry and he's gardening. She can't just say he's gardening, she has to say what he's wearing, he's in bare feet because he took his flip flops off, he's transferring a plant from one pot to a terra cotta pot, what kind of bench is in the garden, the watering can that's under the bench, etc. etc. none of which was pertinent to the plot. I'm okay with some details but this just goes too far. It's hard to start caring about the story when you have all of these "breaks" away from the actual plot. Guess I won't be finishing the alphabet!
This book started out a bit slow but it was interesting to learn about another culture. This book was valuable as it brings awareness to the horrors of human trafficking. It is hard to comprehend that this actually goes on in the world. I would have liked to know more of the story, what happens to the heroine after the end of the book, the continuation of her journey.
This was an interesting book, but I had a hard time getting past the narrator. I thought the narrator was an excellent actor, used good voices, and read very expressively. The problem was, I was often distracted by mouth noises and breathing noises if that makes sense - mouth noises like hearing spit in the mouth, and kind of loud breaths. Hard to explain but it was very distracting to me. And the thing is, if it weren't for those noises, he really would be a great narrator. Maybe he needs a less sensitive mic? I will have to decide if the interesting story is worth listening to more of these books.
I'm surprised there are so many good reviews of this book. It had WAY too much detail. I'm not sure why so much detail was needed, I finally had to stop listening to it, it took way too long to get to the actual story.
The narrator did a good job. However, in a word, this book was ridiculous. I had to stop listening after about 2 hours. The plot was ridiculous, the characters were ridiculous. I could go into a lot of detail with examples of its ridiculousness but I've already wasted 2 hours on this book and I don't want to waste anymore. I never miss an Alex Cross novel and am a big fan of those....surely the guy who wrote this must be a different James Patterson.
This was a good mystery, although many of the characters were a little extreme. Hard to explain what I mean by that, but everyone seemed to be an extreme version of what type of person they were supposed to be, if that makes sense. Also, I have to wonder about the author - what kind of person can dream up the horrific thing this serial killer did to his victims??? I found that quite disturbing. The other con was the ending wasn't entirely satisfying to me. However, all in all it was an interesting mystery story.
I thought it was a really good book in the first half. Unfortunately as soon as the two main characters got together about halfway through, it became quite boring. Too much time spent on long drawn-out sex scenes and boring dialog that really didn't contribute to the several interesting plot lines the author had begun in the beginning of the book. I'll listen through to see how it ends -- I'm getting through it by fast forwarding when it gets too boring, and putting my Ipod on 2x speed so it goes faster when I still want to hear what's going on but the dialog gets too slow. There have still been good parts that pop in here and there in the last half.
