"As great as book one, much more in depth on tech"
Yes, its a great book
I love this book as much as book 1. Books 3-4 are the same story but from different points of view and its not a great story at that. This story is great and it throws you right into the heart of the CDF's best technology and explains it all from the inside out.
"The book with 1 good coda"
The first story is great, the second 2 can be skipped. I still don't understand why Scalzi continued to write after the first "coda" was complete. The rest is like what other books would be if the author answers the question "and then what happened". Sometimes its better if the story is just left where it ends instead of continuing on and telling the story after the story.
"Far better than the original"
If you have read or heard the original and don't know if this is worth the listen / read I would highly recommend it. I have heard both and aside from the horrible reading of the original the story was flat with no real depth. This telling of the story on the other hand has some extra action (it is Scalzi after all) and some much needed depth to the story with additional explanations and well I don't want to ruin it. Check it out its worth it.
"Worth listening to"
The story isn't bad but doesn't offer up the same kick ass action and technology as the first couple of books. By default it cant focus on technology since (SPOILER ALERT) its NOT ALLOWED to be used for the majority of the book. /sigh
So basically Scalzi takes the greatest aspect of the series and right off the bat he comes up with a story line that allows him to completely exempt if from this book.
"Eh..... Skipable"
No, its a rewrite of book 3 from a different point of view
Doesn't really stack up
Not likely
You can skip this one. This book mostly focuses on what its like to be a teenage girl who is at the center of attention and has alien races who will risk their lives for her and all she wants is to be a normal bratty teenage girl with no responsibilities. If you like the Twilight series this book might be for you.
"Best book I ever read / heard"
Star Wars Rival
The Old Man Of Course
This is easily the best book I ever heard. I didn't know what to expect when I first downloaded it but I already heard all other books by Scalzi and somehow skipped over these books so I went back and downloaded them. I am usually not much for book series so I didn't have any intention of downloading them but after hearing Scalzi's other books I was itching for more. After the first few chapters I was already in love with this book and by the end I desperately needed more. The second book was easily as great as the first if only because you can't directly compare the two. They are completely different stories and less of a continuation of the first story as in most series. Scalzi went into great details on all of the things that intrigued me so much in the first book and I didn't feel like anything was missing or skipped over by the time I reached the end. I still wanted more and went onto the third book and it held my attention but I didn't fall completely in love with it like I did book 1 & 2. I didn't care much for Zoe's tale at all, mainly because it was a retelling of book 3 but from a different point of view.
"My favorite book by a long shot"
The imagination put into the story and even when you think you know how its going to end you realize you don't and then you think you got it again and you don't and then out of left field comes something else for the main character to deal with and your thinking well thats that but its not. I love it.
I dont want to give it away but it has to do with AECH
Ogg's Party, I can see it so clearly in my head.
Its much too long for that but I found myself thinking about it non stop until I could pick it up again.
I truly hope they make this into a movie but they have to do it right, the game world should be CGI, not real characters. They should look like Jeff Bridges character in TRON, the CGI version where it looks so realistic but you can still tell its CGI. Of course others have already mentioned that trying to license everything would be a nightmare and may stop this book from ever becoming a film.
"Boring predictable story and long pauses"
Better reader that doesn't have awkward long pauses between sentences and a better story line that isn't so predictable,
Rewrite from the begining
NO
So, so much
I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for something, anything cool to happen and it just wasn't there. One would think electronically modified humans + fictional story = cool but nope. Some people can see better, some are a little smarter, and a select few have military programming but don't get all excited all they can do is fight better and not even like Matrix fighting either.
