A fallen knight, an orphaned girl, & a priest are joined together on a trek through hell on earth hoping to each find salvation, life, or simple peace. It seemed a bit 'Wizard of Oz' ish but Steve West did such an incredible job I couldn't stop listening! I had heard Steve before in a romance book- Knight in Shining Armor- and thought he was terrible so I hesitated on this one. Wow I am so glad I took a chance. This type of genre doesn't usually appeal to me but I am trying to expand and read a broader spectrum. It was deep and sometimes confusing with all the religious banter. The power struggles between good and evil and the fantastic horrific demons /monsters really get your imagination stirring. I loved the way it ended......touching and surprising. The knight, Sir Thomas, will now always be one of my favorite characters.
Loved the story although it took a while getting accustomed to style of her narration. But once I got past that.... I was totally engaged. Great character development!
I was surprised at the depth of character development and the amazing turn of events. I had a hard time in the beginning with the narration and initially found it irritating on the main character of 'Jax'. Once I muddled through this I became entranced. Great story!
Definitely different but surprisingly engrossing. I thought the narration was good and since I like John Lee as a narrator- I am use to his pace and inflections. I thought he was perfect for this dark character and yes.... It is a Twisted story!
Anyone who can listen to this narrator must be in a true coma! I cringe when I hear the voice because it reminds me of when you're put in a corner and told all the things you've done wrong. The story may have been okay..... I just couldn't listen very long to a monotone voice that sounded truly creepy.
I am really let down with the performance in the narration on this one. I felt like I was listening to someone recite a dirge at a funeral. One day I might try to trudge through it but it's very doubtful. Don't they screen these people????
Wow... Yes wow! I admit I had to go back and read snippets of Allegreto's character in the first book because I found he was so ill mannered, petuous and unbearable at times. I had trouble accepting him as the main character in this book until I came to know HIM in a different way- so many different ways. This is a totally different style of romance from Kinsale and YES with a bit of dominatrix......AHEM! Nicely done Laura :)
I love her books. They're so intensely deep and thought-provoking. Narration was perfect. Not long after I listened to this on audio the movie aired on TV! What a pleasant but disappointing surprise because the movie didn't follow the books ending. Still..... Very enjoyable and engrossing read! No spoilers .... Just sit back and prepare to be fully entertained and captivated.
Delve into a guy's thought process on women with this one! I love this alpha male and his brutal honesty about men, women, and sex! Fiction yes, but so on target from a guys point of view. Romance with class!
A cheesy wanna-be to Fifty Shades possibly, but nowhere close in my opinion. If all you want is sex with no substance of story then dive right in. I could only go as far as three or four chapters. Narration was good .
I was so excited to download this series and kept it in my wish list until it was released. Although this was to be my first John Jakes experience I was convinced it was worth the wait, especially after reading reviews from his other series and then even after listening to the trial narration. Perhaps a better narrator would've helped but even putting that aside, the story just didn't grab me. I gave it several chapters and became so bored I couldn't go on. Too simplistic. I realize in a long series it takes time to set up the history of characters and events, but it should also grab and hold your attention while doing so. It will be interesting to wait and read other reviews. Meanwhile...... On to something else!
