The Easter Rising of 1916 was a major turning point in Irish history. Peopled by patriots and poets, fueled by a desperate desire for freedom, and played out in the historic streets of Dublin against the background of World War I, the rebellion is a story of tremendous power and unique poignancy.

connie says: "more than the year 1916"
    "Good story"
    Overall

Good story (BUT) a little short on history. Still worth the time. Leon Uris wrote a better historical fiction on the rebellion. Still a good story though.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Anastasia Burke says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"
"How could anyone be so crule"
    Overall

Great story about the will to live under such " I can't find the word" adversity. Yet so many didn't!

For the first four months of 1942, U.S., Filipino, and Japanese soldiers fought what was America's first major land battle of World War II, the battle for the tiny Philippine peninsula of Bataan. It ended with the surrender of 76,000 Filipinos and Americans, the single largest defeat in American military history. The defeat, though, was only the beginning, as Michael and Elizabeth M. Norman make dramatically clear in this powerfully original book.

    Parusski says: "Riveting and heartbreaking"
    "Tears in the Darkness"
    Overall

Very informative! Now I know why no American POW that was on the Death march ever owned a Japanise car.

In 1894 Carrie McGavock is an old woman who has only her former slave to keep her company...and the almost 1,500 soldiers buried in her backyard. Years before, rather than let someone plow over the field where these young men had been buried, Carrie dug them up and reburied them in her own personal cemetery. Now, as she walks the rows of the dead, an old soldier appears. It is the man she met on the day of the battle that changed everything.

    Joyce says: "Best Yet"
    "Well worth the time!"
    Overall

A great story that reads like a fiction. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story true or not.
