This was not my favorite story. It wasn't bad, but neither was it particularly good. The narrator's voice wasn't particularly great, either.
Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if it spoke to me culturally. It's hard to say.
I bought this b/c it was on sale from Audible, and sounded interesting.
I generally like Tim Robbins as an actor, and I was looking forward to hearing him narrate this classic novel. But, I found his delivery dry and even annoying at times. Having grown up in Port Washington, NY (the prototype for East Egg), I could easily visualize the scenery of the book, Great Neck (West Egg), Queens, Manhattan, etc. But, Tim Robbins attempts at Long Island and New York accents took me way out of the story!
This book is a nice peek into the background of the mysterious John Clark who features prominently in much of the later parts of the series. It also gives some backstory to other characters in the series. While it doesn't carry the Jack Ryan series forward in particular, it does add some depth to the series. There are a few contrivances in the book that I found a bit strained as a way to add extra connections between characters.
Regardless, this is definitely worth a listen. Michael Prichard is not my favorite narrator, but he does an adequate job in the telling.
I liked this story. It was definitely a bit dated, but the great characters and narration made up for it. I will definitely buy more in this series, especially if it's the same narrator.
I really like the reboot of the Jack Ryan series that started with the Teeth of the Tiger. Jack Ryan, Jr. and the Campus make a much more modern plot line than the old Cold War stuff. I liked that stuff back in the 80s and 90s, but it's dated now.
Clancy may not have his fingers on the keyboard writing these new ones, but the characters are consistent with the old days.
Lou Diamond Phillips is a great narrator! Oddly, he sounds like the narrator in my head when I read books . . . Can't explain that one. He's never been my favorite actor, but he is perfect in this role! He really brings out the characters.
