Sounds like a stereotypical psycho bull..... guy, reading a script. The authors reading left much to be desired. book would have done much better without.

Yes, a great story, well written and insightful. The mindset and determination of the folks who endeavor to climb is fascinating. Though I appreciate the work ethic and desire, I can't quite understand the fascination with death. It seems to me the people who do this have some sort of death wish, or at minimum an interest in losing limbs to frostbite and/or friends. The psyche of these people is fascinating. While I can get close to the sensation, and have considered climbing, the brush with death in that environment just could not compel me. The story is well done, the author and narrator good, though in my assessment, he has no reason to feel guilty.

The author's mental anguish over the whole situation. Really makes one think. After some introspection I must say, he has nothing to feel guilty about. Adults making decisions to do something that is probably best left to the professionals. And even they run the risks....

I had a good laugh at the fellow getting close to camp and sliding down head first to the call. Then he actually got up, waved, and walked in. It is not a funny scene, but the spectacle amidst all of the complexity was wild.

I am not sure a movie would be worth seeing. The hero would have to be Hall, but what a shame he perished for the sake of one client achieving the summit. then, after the client is done, he stays with him. Tragic, for both, but what a spirit.

Yes, the story is very good. We have all met these types of people, and to know how they made it through such an unbelievable endeavor, and their perspective on what they and their comrades did, is very interesting.

I have been to Iwo Jima, and have felt the presence of ghosts on that island. When he read about the flag raising, and talked about the young men who raised it, the Marines and Civilians were wet eyed. The story was great, but the presence in that place, who could stay dry eyed. It is an amazing place.

A great read, though the perception of boy's is somewhat misleading and overplayed. While young and innocent in many ways, these are young men. The situation in the world, at the time they lived is tragic in many ways. The things they endured were superhuman, but that does not make them "boys". They are young men, and as stupid and foolish as young men can be, it is a testament to each of them that they continued to do what they do, when asked to do so by their country. I love the men, I spent time with them as a young man, and I hope we never have to endure this type of conflict again.
