  • Demons

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By John Shirley
    • Narrated By John Shirley, Harlan Ellison, Gabrielle de Cuir
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In a future uncomfortably close to the present day, the apocalypse has surpassed all expectations. Hideous demons roam the streets in an orgy of terror, drawing pleasure from torturing humans as sadistically as possible. Ira, a young San Francisco artist, becomes involved with a strange group of scientists and philosophers desperately trying to end the bloody siege. But the most shocking revelation is yet to come.

Laurie says: "Tedious and not what I expected"
    "Too vague."

I like a story that leaves you wondering about right and wrong, good and evil, etc. However, this one left too many questions about what was going on, and the two books seemed artificially joined after the fact.

The demons, their background, philosophies, etc., could and should have been explained in further detail. That would have been fascinating enough to keep me excited.

The Deus Ex Machina is also pretty heavy handed in both books, and kind of cliche'd as well.

Over all, it wasn't BAD per se', but just kind of disappointing.

The narration was quite good; I didn't find an inappropriate moment.

    Anyway, my 2 cents worth.

  • From a Buick 8

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By James Rebhorn, Bruce Davison, Becky Ann Baker

Stephen King's first full-length solo novel since Dreamcatcher, the long-awaited From a Buick 8 is "nearly flawless and one terrific entertainment," says Publishers Weekly. A strange car acts as a conduit between our world and some other...and the boogeyman of this creepy story is our collective fascination with deadly things.

J M says: "Essence of Stephen King"
    "Absolutely top notch."

This is one of the most satisfying audio books from S. King I have listened to to date. The voice acting was absolutely spot on.

I loved the story from when I read it, so I'm biased there. If you're a fan of stories that are inexplicable, strange, and not always resolved completely, this is a great one.

  • Needful Things: The Last Castle Rock Story

    • UNABRIDGED (25 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By Stephen King

A new store has opened in the town of Castle Rock, Maine. It has whatever your heart desires...if you're willing to pay the price. In this chilling novel by one of the most potent imaginations of our time, evil is on a shopping spree and out to scare you witless. Presented unabridged and read by the author.

Jaimie says: "A good book and narration"
"A good S.K. story, but terrible music choice."

The producers of this story chose to use some of the most glaring and inappropriate music for events that were occurring in the plot. For example, during the fight between Wilma Jerczic (sp?) and Nettie Cobb, the music sounded as gay and lively as a calliope. It was absurd given the gruesome tone and nature of the event in the story.

They likewise chose very inappropriate music for several other key plot points, disturbing the mood of the story and making it seem as if the whole thing was some big joke.

So - Story OK for S. King, not the best and not the worst.
Narrator - S.K. himself, doing a good job.
    Music accompaniment - AWFUL.
