I thought I would enjoy this series from the reviews. I enjoy English period mysteries like the Masie Dobbs series, but this was far from Masie Dobbs in my opinion. I found it very bleak, boring and I just wasnt following the story line after a while. I wont be listening to any others in the series!
This was pure garbage. A waste of time. Not well written, not original. There was really nothing I liked about it. I love mysteries but this one was not worth my time.
This book makes me happy that I didnt grow up in the age of the internet. High School was hard enough 40 yrs ago, this depiction of HS now was downright scary! Tana French has a talent for weaving a complicated story that doesnt get boring. The reader was excellent. I love those Irish accents! I still chose Faithful Place as my favorite of her books!
I read this book a year ago and it was suggested for my book club. I didnt want to read it again so I listened the second time around. I enjoyed the audio better than the hard copy. It's an interesting story about a topic I didn't think much about before - women on the prairie who had mental breakdowns. I found it to be a fascinating subject. It was a great bookclub choice and generated excellent discussion. I was looking forward to seeing the movie, but it never seemed to make it to the movie theatres. This story makes you very thankful for living in modern times!
Did not live up to my expectations. The first two books in the series were excellent but this one was boring. I found myself waiting for it to end by the end of the first 1/3. The narrator is excellent and the stories about the Communist Regime kept my interest. The author's personal political bias was quite evident in the stories about the USA, which saddened me. I was hoping that he would report the "history" in a more even handed way. Characters that didnt support his political views were all written as unsympathetic, obnoxious characters and the inverse was true. This made me wonder how heavily opinoned his first two books were. I guess with fiction you can always slant it the way you want. I also got really sick of hearing about the self destructive rock band. I think that it would have been better if he cut the trilogy to just a 2 book series and edited it a little better. Glad I didnt read it, I never would have finished it
As a Nurse I always tell my patients, get a second opinion or a third or a fourth and always have an advocate with you when you go to a hospital. This book kept my interest and I was thankful that Susannah had parents that were amazing advocates for her and kept getting those opinions till they found Dr. Najar who saved her life! What a scary experience she had. She is a very lucky woman!
I love Liane Moriarty, her books keep you guessing from beginning to end. She has the rare talent of combining humor with serious topics without being insensitive. In this wonderful mystery/comedy/commentary on modern life and helicopter parents she is at the top of her game. To give any hints would give away the story. Other reviewers have done a great job, so I can only add that this book will resonate with any parent or educator. It will keep you listening and the ending will not disappoint! MUST LISTEN!!!
I enjoy Greg Iles, all his books keep you listening or reading, they are fast moving and dont disappoint. I can honestly say that I didnt think the reader was that bad! He wasnt great-but he didnt get on my nerves or make me want to stop listening. I guess I am in the minority here but I really didnt mind him. The end of this book got a bit ridiculous but its fiction- so anything can happen. I was interested to see that this is the first in an upcoming trilogy. I will be happy to see what the next book brings!
I started listening to this book and got turned off by the character of Annie Oh after about an hour and quit. My mom read the hard copy and told me to try again. I am so glad that I listened to her. Once I got into the story I was hooked. Wally Lamb is a master at character development. He never shies away from gritty stories and writes such realistic characters its hard to believe they are not real. He must have quite a bit of training in psychology. This story explains how and why the effects of child abuse go on and on for generations - a truly tragic crime. This is not a happy ending story and it leaves you with so much to consider. My bookclub ended up reading it and it was one of our favorites, discussion went on for hours! This is a gem you cannot pass up! The narrators were wonderful and helped keep all the characters defined. Have Wally Lamb narrate the character of Orion Oh, is just perfect and adds so much to the storytelling!
I love Maisie Dobbs, so I eagerly starting listening to this audio. First off the narrator did a horrible job with the male voices, they should have had two narrators or more. Second the story was slow moving and especially the endless boring descriptions of food, ie: food porn. I was going to just stop listening when I got to the millionth description of another boring meal but I kept going for some masochistic reason. I understand the basic premiss of this book, war is hell and in a way nobody ever really "wins". However, human beings don't change if history tells us anything. Ms. Winspear would have been better off writing another Maisie Dobbs story
I tried reading Donna Tartt's previous books and couldn't get into them. Perhaps I will try the audios. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book- I will admit that it could have benefitted from a better editor. However, I did not not get bored. I found myself immersed in the story and I really enjoyed living in Theodores crazy world.I thought the narrator was excellent. I won't go into the story since there are so many reviews, and yes it was a bit far fetched in many instances, but that is what fiction is about. To take us to another world, another life and let us imagine the "what if's...."
