Three generations of Roths live together in a crowded tenement flat. Long-widowed Manya is the family's head and its heart. But Manya is no soft touch, except, perhaps, where her granddaughter Elka is concerned. Precocious Elka is her closest companion and confidante. Through Elka's eyes we come to know the fascinating characters who move in and out of the Roths' lives.

While this book was no great piece of literature, it was an entertaining, engaging story. My Italian grandmother grew up in the NYC tenements and many of her stories were similar although her family was actually poorer than the one described. I think the child's perspective was a good approach, as many of the harsh realities were downplayed. The Tenement Museum in NYC has apartments decorated as they were in this time period - quite interesting.

Sarai was only fourteen when her mother uprooted her to live in Mexico with a notorious drug lord. Over time she forgot what it was like to live a normal life, but she never let go of her hope to escape the compound where she has been held for the past nine years. Victor is a cold-blooded assassin who, like Sarai, has known only death and violence since he was a young boy. When Victor arrives at the compound to collect details and payment for a hit, Sarai sees him as her only opportunity for escape.

I love thrillers and so I ordered this "Drug Lord" story because the idea of a girl caught up in that world and trying to escape sounded like it would keep my interest. After about 2 hrs of listening to that annoying little girl voice and the monotone male voice going on and on with nothing new or different or even suspensful happening I quit! Don't waste your time on this one, its really poorly done.

From the internationally best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, a superbly crafted new work of fiction: eight stories that take us from Cambridge and Seattle to India and Thailand. In the stunning title story, Ruma, a young mother in a new city, is visited by her father, who carefully tends the earth of her garden, where he and his grandson form a special bond. But he's harboring a secret from his daughter, a love affair he's keeping all to himself.

I like to listen to books that are about different cultures rather than read them due to the correct pronouniations of unfamiliar names, places and things. I love Lahiri's writing, she brings depth to simple stories that we can all relate to, we all struggle with the same family dynamics and emotions. She deftly brings to life those emotions and challenges we all face. I usually dont like short stories, however, some of these relate to each other. Sarita's narration was excellent, Ajay's was not as good. I enjoyed every moment listening to this book!

Beth Hoffman’s bestselling debut, Saving CeeCee Honeycutt, won admirers and acclaim with its heartwarming story and cast of unforgettable characters. Now her unique flair for evocative settings and richly drawn Southern personalities shines in her compelling new novel, Looking for Me.

I love Jenna Lamia, she is such a good narrator. I enjoyed, Saving Ceecee Honeycutt. I liked this book for the first half and then it became a chore to listen to it. It was way too long and needed better editing. If it had been better edited I may have enjoyed it, but it just dragged on and on and on, going nowhere. Even Jenna's talents as a narrator couldnt save it from being terminally boring!

Spring 1937. In the four years since she left England, Maisie Dobbs has experienced love, contentment, stability - and the deepest tragedy a woman can endure. Now all she wants is the peace she believes she might find by returning to India. But her sojourn in the hills of Darjeeling is cut short when her stepmother summons her home to England; her aging father, Frankie Dobbs, is not getting any younger.

I think that Ms. Winspear has come to the end of the Maisie Dobbs series with this book. She clearly cannot think of anywhere else to lead our favorite heroine. This book started with a sad ending of Maisie's happiness and dragged through an extremely boring case with boring characters that went nowhere. I think the ending was a good place to end the saga of Maisie. I was sad that this is how the story played out, but I think the author has lost her edge at this point. I really enjoyed all the books up to this point but this one was just slow moving and dragged on. Another thing that bothered me with the usually perfect Orlagh Cassidy's performance. She continually misprounounced the name Chana. Its her responsibility to know how to pronounce names, the C is silent - simple thing but took away from her usually A+

I enjoyed this book, it kept my interest, it was decently written and the narration was excellent. I enjoy different readers and that kept this one interesting for me.It definately will not bore you!

The Providence Rider is the fourth installment in the extraordinary series of historical thrillers featuring Matthew Corbett, professional problem solver. The narrative begins in the winter of 1703, with Matthew still haunted by his lethal encounter with notorious mass murderer Tyranthus Slaughter. When an unexplained series of explosions rocks his Manhattan neighborhood, Matthew finds himself forced to confront a new and unexpected problem. Someone is trying - and trying very hard - to get his attention.

When you listen to the Matthew Corbett series you have to remember the stories are far fetched and ridiculous, but that is fiction! It is so much fun! This book has the same amount of insane characters, violence and adventure as the previous books. It was not my favorite but it's still fun to listen to. Of course Edoardo Ballerini makes it all come to life, he is my absolute favorite!

By 1920, the movies had suddenly become America's new favorite pastime and one of the nation's largest industries. Never before had a medium possessed such power to influence; yet Hollywood's glittering ascendancy was threatened by a string of headline-grabbing tragedies - including the murder of William Desmond Taylor, the popular president of the Motion Picture Directors Association, a legendary crime that has remained unsolved until now.

The year is 1703. The place: The Carolina settlement of Charles Town. Matthew Corbett, professional 'problem solver,' has accepted a lucrative, if unusual, commission: Escorting a beautiful woman to a fancy dress ball. What should be a pleasant assignment takes a darker turn when Matthew becomes involved in a murder investigation.

As other listeners have already reported if you love this series you will be very annoyed with the way this book stops abruptly in the middle of the story. Its half the length of his other books and literally stops right in the middle of the episode. I cannot understand why the author did this, since he has a loyal following, unless there was some deadline he had to meet for his publisher.Still, the series is fun to listen to and Edoardo Ballerini could read the dictionary to me he is so amazing! Now I must anxiously await book 6 and hope that we dont get shortchanged again!

A nine-year-old boy is found murdered at the bottom of a well near a popular beach resort in southern Italy. In what looks like a hopeless case for Guido Guerrieri, a Senegalese peddler is accused of the crime. Faced with small-town racism, Guido attempts to exploit the esoteric workings of the Italian courts. The voice of Sean Barrett brings this gritty Italian detective series to life.

I believe that very often books lose something in translation - to me this occurred with this book. It never really grabbed me - I didn't like the main character and couldn't relate to him. The narration was dull and boring with very little intonation sounded like Colin firth - if it was he should stick to theatre. I wouldn't waste my points on this book

As a big fan of Liane Moriarty I was so disappointed in this book. It was clearly one of her earlier works and it does not come close to her standards. Steer clear away from this one. After one hour of trying to follow the story I had to stop listening. I think this is one of the few times I will ask to return this book
