"A nice slice of Indian life with a little romance"
I enjoyed this book. It was a little slow at first but gets more interesting as characters fill out. I don't know much about everyday Indian life but this story comes across as authentic. The romance is enjoyable but maybe not so believable. Primarily I enjoyed the descriptions of Indian life and relationships.
"Insipid"
Well, it seems like some like it. For me, too much a sloppy romance and improbable events. Reader is sickenly sweet.
"Another world another time."
This novel, written in 1958, will carry Anglos born before 1950 into social values and moral values of a bygone age. It may seem dated or even unbelievable to younger readers, but the values and morals of this age did exist.
The story is engaging and well read. The tangled storyline I found a little confusing as I listened but not less interesting because of it. As I listened, I thought that Shute was probably not at his best in this book. However, at the end Shute pulls the tangled threads into a coherent plot and resolution.
The story seems a little more contrived that other Shute novels, but it does work.
I debated giving this a 5 star but settled on 4 as this is a very good story but not the masterpiece of Shute's "A Town Like Alice".
I liked the reader, but the halting style might bother some. Best to listen to the sample.
This makes me wish to listen to more Shute novels which I think were recently added to Audible.
"Excellant Historical Fiction"
I found this story to be well written, gripping and interesting in it's fictionalized glimpse into Tudor England and the Reformation. The narration is excellent. The descriptions vivid. Highly recommend.
"Chet tells it like it is"
Long on Chet, ok on mystery. Chet and Bernie mysteries warm the hearts of dog lovers. This one continues in that genre. Enjoyable.
"Less than Light Fiction"
I bought this on sale thinking a little frivolous entertainment might not be such a bad thing. Well it didn't get a one star so I guess it wasn't completely awful.
The accent annoyed me. The telling seemed a little insipid. The story a bit stupid.
Well some may enjoy it for what it is, but not so much for me.
"Worth it's reputation"
This will be a short review as so much is written. I'm glad I listened to this book. However, I have a mixture of feelings about it's presumed lessons.
I give it 4 stars as an excellent read. I seldom give 5 stars.
"Inspiring Story"
This is an engaging fictionalization of a true story of the American frontier. I was engaged by the story and reading. Finishing the book, I looked for information on the true events and found that they were remarkably similar to the fictionalized version. This is truly an incredible tale of courage and determination. Well worth the read.
I gave this a 4 as an excellent read. I seldom give 5 stars.
"I fell in love with this book"
I had to restart the first 5 minutes 3 times struggling to catch the dialect of the book and reader. However, after that I listened right along without even noticing the brogue ( other than a particular character whose accent is quite thick.)
The story is a simple romance. What I found so engaging is the capturing in the story of the experiences of rural agrarian life in 17th century southern England. I became enchanted near the beginning of the second segment of the Audible recording where the excitement of harvest is shared by the reciting of harvest chants. This just magic to me in the way the thoughts, beliefs, love and understanding of life is conveyed by the story.
I understand now why Lorna Doone is a famous novel. It may not work for everyone but I'm very glad I listened.
"Literary Raunch"
I refuse to give a 5 to anything this lewd, wanton and generally lascivious.
Consider yourself warned. ( chuckle)
