A runaway planet hurtles toward Earth. As it draws near, massive tidal waves, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions wrack our planet, devastating continents, drowning cities, and wiping out millions. In central North America, a team of scientists race to build a spacecraft powerful enough to escape the doomed Earth. Their greatest threat, they soon discover, comes not from the skies but from other humans.

Thanks Audible for providing us with this book and its sequel. What most people don't realize is that this book was pubished in 1932 and its sequel, After Worlds Collide was published in 1933. They both have held up fairly well too. So feel free to spend your money, as these are books you'll enjoy. But just remember when they were written and adjust your thinking accordingly.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

I can't get over how more enthralling this version of Dune is. I love the way that the narrators interact and overall this version is the best of the Dune series yet. Yep, I purchased the others years ago, but I wish that they would do all of them this way. Listen to it, you definitely won't be disappointed.

Here is one of the best historical novels ever written. Lame, stammering Claudius, once a major embarrassment to the imperial family and now emperor of Rome, writes an eyewitness account of the reign of the first four Caesars: the noble Augustus and his cunning wife, Livia; the reptilian Tiberius; the monstrous Caligula; and finally old Claudius himself. Filled with poisonings, betrayal, and shocking excesses, I Claudius is history that rivals the most exciting contemporary fiction.

It was in the 70's and I was entralled by PBS's series on the books about I, Claudius. After all this time, I found this book and it's companion entertaining, engrossing, and full of intrigue, murder, and suspense. I highly recommend this book and its companion for those who enjoy reading historial novels. Robert Graves really outdid himself. Please read it, you won't be disappointed.

Readers everywhere have become entranced by the New York Times best-selling No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, from acclaimed author and award-winning wit Alexander McCall Smith. Each charming book in the series is a masterpiece of comic subtlety and a window for viewing the distinctive culture and landscape of Botswana.

I'm sorry, but I just couldn't get into this book. I found it to be boring and trite. After the first few chapters, it just didn't pick up speed in the story. I just can't recommend this book as a good read. Wish I could, but it just couldn't hold my interest.

In the story comic book legend Stan Lee calls "spellbinding" and "totally original," Thom Creed has secrets. For one, like his father, he has super powers. Also, he's been asked to join the League—the very organization of superheroes that spurned his dad. Then there’s the secret Thom can barely face himself: he's gay. But becoming a member of the League opens up a new world to Thom. There, he connects with a misfit group of aspiring heroes, including Scarlett, Typhoid Larry, and Ruth, a wise old broad who can see the future. Like Thom, these heroes have things to hide....

First of all, let me say I hate prejudice of any kind. This book shows a young boy trying to come to grips with his sexual preferences with today's society of morons. Yep, morons. It was heart wrenching at times for me, when listening to his coping with this. I did enjoy this book very much and yep, would recommend it for others to read. Especially our society's "morons" who keep insisting everyone needs to fit "their mold". Please read this book, it's quite entertaining, educational, and at times will make you laught and cry.

Stephanie Harrington had always expected to be a forest ranger on her homeworld of Meyerdahl until her parents relocated to the frontier planet of Sphinx in the far distant Star Kingdom of Manticore. It should have been the perfect new home - a virgin wilderness full of new species of every sort, just waiting to be discovered. But Sphinx is a far more dangerous place than ultra-civilized Meyerdahl, and Stephanie's explorations come to a sudden halt when her parents lay down the law: no trips into the bush without adult supervision!

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

I'm 72, so when I was 13 I went to stay with an aunt in Nashville, Tennessee. I was bred, born, and raised in Chicago by a family who was totally colored blind. I was appalled with what I saw. I just couldn't believe how they treated afro-americans. So when I read this book I cried, laughed, and remembered that trip so long ago. I hope Kathryn Stockett keeps on writing books, as she's such a gifted author. I also hope another book will be written about The Help, so I can find out about Minnie, who reminded me of my grandmother, and all the other characters that I grew to love when I listened to this book. As for the reading, it was fantastic, I was right there in the book with the characters. It was wonderful. There should be more books read this way with the actors, for that's what they are, reading in this manner. My sincere thanks to the author, and to the actors who read this book, for bringing these characters alive, and bringing back all those memories of my youth and especially my visit to Nashville and how glad I am that the sights I saw are no more.

    Overall

I don't like vampire books, but when Audible had an offering of "first book in a series" at an incredibly inexpensive price, of course I bit. Sneaky audible books. It's all their fault that I'm now hooked on Sookie Stackhouse vampire mysteries. These books are excellent. I didn't fall asleep at all, which I'm prone to do at times. Now I will have to buy all of the series just to find out what's going on. I highly recommend these books. But warning: be careful when Audible has another offering such as this, you may get hooked too. So enjoy this book, I certainly did. And thanks Audible, keep up the good work.

Dying, Paslew curses Demdike's offspring -- who become the titular "Lancashire Witches."

I'm currently listening to this book. It's quite difficult to understand the characters due to the fact that the reader is quite heavy on the Scottish accents. You can barely understand him. I realize he's into the character, but if you can't understand what they are saying, well....... Hopefully, it will improve, but so far not too good.

Earth is conquered. The Shongairi have arrived in force, and humanity’s cities lie in radioactive ruins. In mere minutes, over half the human race has died. Now Master Sergeant Stephen Buchevsky, who thought he was being rotated home from his latest tour in Afghanistan, finds himself instead prowling the back country of the Balkans, dodging alien patrols and trying to organize the scattered survivors without getting killed.

    "Great Book/Lousy Reader"
    Overall

I purchased the hard cover of this book and was looking forward to hearing it. Unfortunately the reader sounds like he's trying to lick the mike and gargle at the same time. The book, very detailed, delves in background at first and then hones in to the finish. Although some may think the finish isn't the best, I found it quite enjoyable. If you want to put up with a very, very, poor reader, this book is quite enjoyable.
