It's unfortunate that this one is so badly narrated. I liked the story line, but I was so annoyed by Stephen Lang's inability to do accents, I had a difficult time getting through it. Most of his characters sound just like Mr Rogers. I would recommend buying the book IN PRINT, or trying a different audio book.

The story is interesting and thought-provoking; the protagonist was genuine and likeable; there were lots of plot twists; and it takes place during an intriguing time & place. If that's not enough, this may be the best narration I've ever heard, and I've listened to close to 100 audio books. Edoardo Ballerini does much more than just read the book--he performs it brilliantly!

The acting sounded amateur, and the sound effects were so bad it was laughable. I was glad this one was short.

I wonder if Lisa Gardner has any experience working outside of the home. My guess is that she does not. Most of the dialogue between detectives/officers is completely unbelievable. Some of the things D.D. says to her coworkers sound more like what a mom would say to a teenage son or daughter.

As to the performance, Kristen Potter did a nice job with the Boston accents. She has an expressive voice, making her a good narrator.

I listen to audio books all the time, so I'm used to listening to stories, and I found this one very difficult to follow. The story jumps around a lot. If Katherine Boo had worked with a professional novelist, the result might have been better. And the monotone narration didn't help.

I listened to this audio book before going to work in the morning, and it made me late a few times. It's so gripping, it's hard to turn it off! The characters seem very real - they're complex individuals (not black & white). The story is made up of various subplots, which are eventually woven into an important central theme. It's been a while since I've enjoyed a book as much as this one. Nice job, Tom Rob Smith! As to the narration, Dennis Boutsikaris has a voice that I find easy to listen to, and he does nice Russian accents, without overdoing it.

I'm afraid to quote, paraphrase, or summarize this book, for fear of the author's views being taken as my own. If you hate all democrats, Japanese, Muslims, and Mexicans, you might like this book. If I could get past the racism and politics, I'd be reading a book about unlikeable jerks. I've endured over 5 hours of it, and I can't take it anymore. I'm deleting this one from my library.

The story is told in two time periods, with the seven main characters as prepubescent kids (late 1950's), and then later (mid 1980's) with the same characters as adults. You know right away that one of the adults has recently committed suicide, but that the others are alive and well. This makes it impossible to get too worked up over any of the would-be scary chapters involving the kids. You know they all survive, so where's the suspense? And how can a detailed description of kids having sex not be considered kiddie porn??? I wish Audible had put a warning on this one. If you happen to be a pedophile, your gonna love the chapter where all six boys bang their friend, and she likes it. This is the last Steven King book I'll ever read. (The only reason I gave It one star is because Audible won't allow zero stars.)
